Cub shelter

For over a year I've been complaining about my garage and the lack of space because of all the tractor stuff I've accumulated. So this weekend I decided to finally do something about it.

We started by scraping the ground clear and then dumping a LOT of 3/4 crushed stone. After we spread it all around and leveled the area I put 2x6 pressure treated wood for the base and drove some rods into the ground to secure it in place. I had previously assembled the framework so we moved it into position and I bolted it to the 2x6's.

Here are a few shots of the finished project, it's been a long time coming, I hope this thing doesn't blow away...

Did you remember to put a plastic vapor barrier down? Keeps the stuff from rusting,If not they sell it in 6mil and up,I put mine on top of the gravel.Keeps leaky tractors from making a mess. Also you need to vent the gable ends.I didn't but I just left the front open.
I like the round style, better for snow and wind loads. But I don't think it is big enough.

Lew,
I was going to put some plastic down but the dump truck showed up early and I didn't have time to go get some. At it's lowest point there's 5+ inches of stone, at the deepest it's over a foot.

Trebor,
That was my failed discussion with my girlfriend about "Absolutely nothing but Cub stuff in here!", She won...

May I ask what size is this? 12 x 20? And the company or brand? I thought about this solution also, but I'm concerned about the durability of the material.

Tmo,
I bought it in Rhode Island at Sams Club. It's 8'6Hx20Lx12W

Here's a link with all the info about it: http://www.samsclub.com/sams/shop/produ ... tId=134046

I looked around at alot of different shelters like at Tractor supply, etc. I got this one because it was "snow rated" and it has that Quonset hut look to it, I figured the snow would roll off it easier... I agree with Lew though, I am definitely going to need to vent the gable ends so there's no moisture buildup.

Ray,

Here is a name for your new Cub Den. "RUST Hut". That would be Ray's Used Small Tractor Hut.

willy,

i have to agree with mr palma make sure u leave vents somewhere otherwise it will RAIN inside your tent in the summer.
We have a few of those at the club and we just leave the ends off so the air can move. I bought my W-4 from a guy that had it stored in one of those tents and i think he did it more harm then the guy that left it in the river!

Looks like it will make for some cheap storage. It will at least keep them out of the snow and the rain.
Thanks for posting the progress pictures!

Willy,
Nice job!! This year a got a 24x80 and a 16 x 80 green houses. They where free. I just put up the small green house and only made it 20 feet long. I pul the pipes on 2 foot OC originaly they where 4 foort OC. What is the spacing of yours? I just used an old tarp for now and will het a camo tarp for it. The 24 x 80 will be put up in Pa when I get a chance. It will be put up on 3 or 4 foot OC but will be covered in metal roofing for a more permanet finish.
Great job!!

Todd,
Thanks for the link, that site has plastic vents that can be cut into the gable ends. I'm hoping to get one for each end.

Mike,
This one cost 339.00, I wish I had gotten mine for free! The ribs are spaced 4ft on center. It seems to be pretty rugged so far, only time will tell.

I have one like that
Image

If the snows gets more than 8" deep on it, take a CLEAN ( nothing sharp to tear or poke holes ) push broom and knock the snow off of it. Ours is about 10 years old and still doing well.

I have one that I got through Farmtek. VERY tough material. I had it up for about 2 years when I got lazy and didn't open the door fully. Middle of winter and snowing and I just wanted to get the tractor out to clear the snow. Started driving out and STOPPED! Tires were spinning and I thought I had just caught the blower on some ice. Backed up and gave it a bit more hydro and still didn't move very far. Decided that I had better clean that spot first so I got out of the cab, and discovered that because I didn't open the door enough the cab had caught on the door material and that was what was stopping me! Managed to cut a 4" slit in the door. No other damage.
DEFINITELY vent it. For the first year mine had a rainstorm in it daily! Installed vents at the top so air could move and it's much better.
So far mine has been up for 10 years. Other than replacing the torn door panel (more for looks than anything else) it has been trouble free, even with 6 foot of snow piled around it and 2 foot on top.

Lucas,
At least you can see the floor in your cub area. In my 14x22 garage (even with all the shelving, etc) I can't see the floor. And I have to move my Harley outside just to walk around in there...

I learned about rain in the shed.
The one I put up when I lived in PA, I did not put any kind of vapor barrier down.
I would literally open the doors on a beautiful day to find my tractors were wet! the condensation would drip from the ceiling.

When I put the one up in WV, I laid down a heavy plastic barrier before I put the stone down.
I never had an issue with condensation.

Both steel skinned non insulated.
