Last Saturday I was outside replacing clap boards and painting with a T shirt on. Ugh.

Saturday? Try Wednesday here! We only got a dusting and it all washed away when it turned to rain.

Well it was bound to happen sooner or later after all it's just before Christmas. About three inches of the soggy wet stuff.

Our power just came back on after being off for a couple of hours.
The 102 did a nice job of mopping up. It had been difficult to start the last couple of times and a fresh spark plug straightened that issue right out.
Note to self, remember to attach the wire back on first

Crikey, here we go! "Ken's winter driveway battle thread"! Ken, I do feel for you, but you do such a good job of sharing each year, with great pics, it's like being there, like we're in the battle with you! So, right now, this is like pre-season scrimmage time. Things are going to get real, real soon! It's also my warning to go get my blower mounted up.

Keep us posted, as usual. It's good forum stuff as I sit by the fire. Here's to hoping you don't have a complete driveway washout this year!

Never good when ken gets it! I’m only a week or two behind. We did get a dusting of snow/sleet Saturday but rain mostly and it was gone almost as fast as it fell.
I pulled the bagger off the 682 today. I did sell a 127 all set up with a plow, I have a 129 ready to go as well. Per the norm here, the truck is ready, although it is due for a oil change, I’ll pick up supplies this week. It won’t be long now folks.

With a new baby due up back there in three months there is a renewed rigor to keep that drive open and clear at all times and I will be right on top of that from now on.
Now I'm not here to fire up a debate but I believe climate change is real. There have been at least three unreported wash outs here in the last year. That's how many we normally used to get in ten. Now, I need to convince my neighbor over on the other side to get an 8 inch culvert in where it's needed. The water flow patterns are not consistent with normal activity and three inches of rain in one hour is not normal either. If the issue were over on my side I'd have four guys with jack hammers on it yesterday.

Tom, a fire sounds good and so I did, first one of the season too- it's been a pretty rough last three weeks around here. This ought to muster up some holiday spirit in me.

Here are my pics of 2022's Class III Kill Storm. We had ~40 cm in less than 12 hours. It was a whopper for us.
The 123 and the QA-36 (with freshly rebuilt gearbox) performed well with the exception of traction. I had a helluva time backing up my drive way.
The Carlisle ag tires just didn't cut it on the ice, so I have to look into chains. Anyone have recommendations? Ags with chains or turfs with chains: what's your experience? Enjoy! The first two pics are of the initial run down the drive. Things went a little easier after that first run (last photo).

Thanks for the pictures guys. Yes chains are a must Mike. Looks like your gonna have a hard time finding a place to blow all that snow with the tight Quarters. I remember my old house like that, you just have to pile it higher.lol. North of Philadelphia we had about 2" at bedtime. Woke up to nothing as it rained all night.

Yes, it is hard to find the space. If only I few extra feet on each side of the driveway. But with the blower I can pile it up at least, as long as we don't get hit by another storm soon. The pile down my the road is almost 4' high. A dozer blade would be fun too, but I just don't have anywhere to push the snow. Maybe it's time to move to the countryside. ;)
Cheers!

Mike, great snow shots! Turfs with chains are the only way to go. The chains fall down in between the Ag lugs and aren't as effective, but with turfs all the chains can touch like they're supposed to. Also, only buy "2 link" high quality chains vs cheapo "4 link". 2-link have just "two side links" per each cross chain, therefore twice as many cross chains with less gap between cross chains. Better traction and a smoother ride. Also, some brands are heavier duty then others, so compare what you're getting for the money. A cheaper "2 link" will still perform well but will wear out sooner.

Thanks for the input Tom. Makes perfect sense. The only concern I have yet is how my paved driveway will hold up. I guess it depends how much air pressure I would be running and how I work the speed control lever (e.g. more spinning = more potential damage.)
Have you heard of anyone having success with some kind of offroad/atv tire? Probably not much better than a regular turf tire. Cheers! :)

Mike - I have a very steep driveway and I still only spin with chains when I'm being too aggressive, more usually on braking going downhill after the driveway is clear. There is not a tire choice that works instead of chains. 2 link chains with turfs are just the only way to go. Just make sure you don't get the chains with the "V bars", they will destroy asphalt. When I do spin with normal chains, it just leaves marks on the asphalt, but it doesn't tear it up.

The V-Bar?! I thought they closed that place down after all of those strippers came down with the Clap! ;) lol
Thanks for the input guys.
We had some more snow today so I got another chance to play around.
The Carlisle ag tires I have on the back are super stiff, so I thought I'd check the tire pressure and drop it down some.
They were at 12 psi so I aired them down to 5 psi. The tires didn't feel any softer, but there was a small yet very noticeable improvement in traction.
Just the difference between moving and spinning. I didn't get stuck and the snow was over hard ice in spots.
I also adjusted my driving habit to be far gentler, trying to avoid wheel spin altogether to avoid creating ice under the wheel.
The hydro is nice as i could just creep it along.
Long story short, I live to tell the tale! lol
I am going to look into those two link chains. Or maybe even a new 3X 26 walk behind. ;)

My blade fitted 102 looks as though it is going to be down for the duration of the Winter. I'm fairly sure that the spirol pin at the transmission reduction housing end has sheared. The drive shaft and clutch seem to work just fine. Pretty sure that the #5 drive shaft end connection to the input shaft is the problem. No big shock there after having moved thirty five tons of 3 inch stone and gravel over the Summer. It's always a bummer trying to get that out.
Rather than trying to fix it on the frozen ground I've called in professional snow removal help for the rest of the season. We had about 4 inches of loose granular powder here, that is far less than what the metro Boston area experienced.
The 126 with it's QA42 thrower did a child's play job on the mopping up process when I could see where where I was going, that powder was blowing everywhere.

I got pretty lucky with where the 102 broke down and I had to push it only 25 feet or so to get it out of my way.
And where it is it is going to stay :(

Those V-Bar chains will do a real number on any hard surfaced driveway. Great on ice or gravel though.
My machine is still sitting in the shop. The first snow we got here was about 2" and that's not even enough to bother moving it. The next was a bit more but the wind got into it and other than a drift between the houses and one by the mailbox it mostly blew across the road. Did get the walk behind out for about 20 minutes to knock a hole in the drift though.

Ken, that view looks familiar, back when we had our Corgi I would blow off a large section of the lawn so he didn't have to drag his ***** in the snow. Used to find leaves, grass, and the occasional hunk of dirt in there. Found a rock in the neighbors driveway one time. It came out like a cannonball and took the chute with it. Wasn't happy.
