I saw the owner start and drive this tractor on sat. morning at Coolspring and in 1st gear it flies but not much torque. A bystander said it seems like a detroit...."it turns fuel into noise"

Look where the exhaust is compared to the intake. How are the valves configured inside there? Still, can't complain with a fast Cub

There are no valves on a rotary engine. There is a rotor inside that divides the combustion chamber into 3 sections. It's not the same as a 4-stroke at all.

Rotary engines have NO torque...this is why that thing has to turn so many rpms.

Interesting. I may have to grab one of those and tear it down sometime for curiosity's sake. Learn something new everyday.

I bet that S/G don't like it when the engines turning 6800 RPM's . It doesn't look like he's changed the size of the pulleys , its a wonder he hasn't scattered the armature yet .
I did that once with a generator when I missed a gear in my old 56 chevy at the local dragstrip. .
Ahh ..the good old days .

Kevin,
Do an internet search on Wankle rotary engine or Mazda rotary engine and I'm sure you'll find all kinds of info on how they work.
If they can be woud up they can make a lot of power in a small lightweight package.

Here is the home page for a simple moving diagram with an explanation of how it works

I used to have an RX-7 Turbo II, and I can attest to the "no torque" thing. You had to run it up to 3000 RPM and dump the clutch if you wanted any take-off at all. But then it would howl along at 7000 RPM (governed redline) all day with no sweat. In fact, you were supposed to do that from time to time in order to shake the carbon out of the apex seals.

Jlaws,
did you have to mod the clutch to handel the engine?

I run a double stacked clutch with two belts to handle the higher horsepower .
Actually the engine pulley is a triple pulley , but the third belt runs the hydrolift.
