Rees 10 ton jack

I found a 10 ton rees jack in my father in laws shed. Probably from the 30s or 40s. I can get it to jack up under load but not down. There is a ratcheting mechanism that rotates a horizontal shaft. This mechanism slides off the shaft but the key way is only cut out on one side so I can't just reverse it as I suspected.
