Winter is coming

Post by Doog M »

Paul R
It's starting up.
Time to get the mower decks off and get the Blades and blowers ready.

A COLD NORTHWEST FLOW OVER THE GREAT LAKES WILL PRODUCE THE FIRST
SNOW ACCUMULATION OF THE SEASON TONIGHT INTO SATURDAY. A MINOR
ACCUMULATION OF LESS THAN AN INCH IS LIKELY IN MOST LOCATIONS...WITH
ISOLATED AMOUNTS OF 1 TO 2 INCHES OVER THE NORTHWEST MOUNTAINS AND THE
LAUREL HIGHLANDS.

Where's our weatherman?

It's getting near time to put the old Ford up. First sign of salt and he goes in the garage.

Paul,
I like your attitude. Maybe we can keep fall going right on through till spring?

The 102 is ready this Morning- bring it on!
Two link chains with cross bars on Sears tires, 6 IH wheel weights and 80 pounds lead out back ought to get things done traction wise

Ken,
How much does each IH wheel weight weigh?

I'll be finishing getting the 125 together this weekend for snow duty, QA-42 thrower, chains and about 200 lbs of steel plate in a rear mounted home made carrier.

I'll add pictures after I have it together

Jeff,
I'm not sure as I have never weighed one myself but folks report that they are 26 pounds apiece. That would come to 156 pounds and then adds 80 for the lead ingots making 236 pounds total.
When I built that transaxle I used all the better choice stuff but there was one thing on hand that I was short of- axles. Those are the old style non flange type and I do have some concerns about them.

Scott, Vince & Ken,

Thanks for the weight amount. I may just get some burnout of steel plate thru work since the going piece seems to be a "steal" at $75 a pair to a normal price of $100 a pair.

Ken,
Thanks for the heads up on the axle weakness. I don't work mine too hard so I'm not real concerned about it. Most of my snow removal is with the thrower so that's not high impact.

Those IH weights are really more decorative than useful because they take up a fair amount of room, yet only weight 26 pounds each. I have two pairs and use them, only because I got them for free. Most of my other weights are much heavier and more space-efficient off-brand weights that fit further into the wheel.

These are early style cast Bolens weights on the 126. They weigh 52 pounds each, that's as much as 2 IH weights. The later style Bolens weights were more squared off at the edges and carried the FMC logo on the outside face, I think that those type were drilled for four mount bolts too. They are really nice and compact with much of the weight toward the center of the wheel. They can be something of a chore to put on though.
I have seen wheel weights that look very much like a doughnut on the outside with lots of mass on the inside- those things were really sweet! Does anyone here know who made those?
DSCN0285.JPG
Lucas, that is graphite paint on the face of the blade. It helps prevent snow from sticking to the blades face. Most tractor supply places carry it in brush or spray form. I like the brush on type better as it goes on much thicker but the spray is great for touch up jobs.

Right now it is 42 here. The furnace ran all day. Of course you understand that in the south a furnace fits in a tea cup.

Well its going back down tonight in the low 30's. I picked my last tomato the other day and forgot to pic the green long keepers today. Snowed in Asheville today and Marc came over and said we had a good bit of sleet yesterday. I wasnt home But I was in the Asheville Charlotte and Agugta areas and the air was cool and crisp!

On another note I got my PECO vac running today and will mount it up tomorrow to start the leaf war. It will last till about the 2nd week of dec. Also I got a call from deer camp with one dead deer and my nephew said it was snowing there too.

So word to the wise, if you guys keep running this old junk we will have snow in Augest in another 100 yrs!

well last year I had the Original with non trip and the 109 all bladed up and we never had a flake of snow. I am a bit behind this year as I have no blades
on any cubs yet but the O and 149 are the snow cubs dedicated for this year. We have gone 7 yrs with no snow before .... but we did get bombed with 3 ft
back in 96 so it can happen (praying)
I did get to use the O 2 years ago and pushed snow for the first time with no weights or fluids and it was a blast. Here is a shot from my glory day

Ken L are you talking about weights like these? They reside on the back of my 107 at the moment and they weigh 80Lbs a piece. Made by E. Rowe Foundry, ILL. They are not fun to mount espescially when your dad runs the tire off the rim at plowday.

Speaking of winter, you guys won't like me cause a moldy colored tractor is gonna do the plowing at my house this winter.

I have 2 of them made by a forum mmder. 1 I kept on the 129 so when the zero turns wold come in dead Id pick up the front ends and drag them to the shop. Too bad you dont have a deck, you could call Tomy and see if he has any more of these. I called him yesterday and thanked him for taking my money! LOL Oh and he told me his Dad died. I didnt know that and he figured you would have told me. Did you ever meet Tom Sr? Cool guy and he kept you laughing all the time. Here he is from the first time I met the Tommy.

I got mine from a member about six years ago. I actually found out about Tom's dad, a couple of days, before you did. I never got to meet Tom's dad, but I would have loved to.

Chad,
Wow, those are the largest 12 inch wheel weights I've ever seen! Where on Earth did you ever get those things? There has got to be a story behind finding them!
I want three sets
Sorry I provided a fairly poor description of the ones that I saw some years back and doughnut was not the best of terms- I probably had geezer in the back of my mind at the time! Really bagel half would be a much closer approximation. Those things were really cool, and they went deep into the inside of the wheel too- almost to the hub flange.
I tried to envision some way of depicting them but really this was all the best that I could come up with.
DSCN0295.JPG
Now you know that the Wife wanted to know what I was up to when I rifled thru that whole bag looking for the perfect one and took it downstairs-
Just hungry dear
