Scott C, was wondering if you have a current count of how many members we have on the site now. I know we hit 500 around the first of the year, but we had over 2000 on the old site if I remember correctly. Anyway, how are we doing?

Jim,
I don't get to see any of the drilling or pad prep work. I only work with the compression side. In fact, a good part of the Marcellus play free flows at like 800 psig for a while before they even think about compressing it for transmission.
Here is a link to a walk around of a compressor station. Don't know who's it is but it's a Waukesha engine with an Ariel compressor.
Probably moves about 12 Mmscfd of gas a day, give or take a million or two.

Having a real problem with the brakes - Put new pads on an new rotor , adjusted rear brakes. bled the whole system. even tried a new rebuilt master cylinder.

It does show signs of almost having or wanting to have brakes , but still on the spongy side and a panic stop isn't in it's vocabulary.
I can spike them at 40 mph and the screwdriver in the back stayed on the bed liner half way back in the bed.

I am about to jack up the radiator cap and drive a Ford or Dodge under it .

Try a gravity bleed but don't let the resourvor get low one wheel at a time ending up on the RS wheels. Are you sure your rear self adjusters are working if you have them?

Geezer I have bleed the brakes many times and I even did it the last time with a vacuum pump.
Starting with the furtherest away. It has a proportioning Valve ( This has a box with wires mounted beside it ) and not sure what other block is called on the other side of Master cylinder --Looks like two little tin cans on it .
I have used a quart and a half so far and fluid is now clear and I see no air.

Farmallgrey,
The Vacuum booster seems fine but the peddle travel seems like it goes too far if forced) makes a whooshing sound -- it don't do that if just applying normal brake peddle . it will stop and seems even -- (no pulling), but I would never pull a trailer with it as is . If I needed to stop quick Panic it just slows down gradualy.

I have been told it may be the proportioning valve --- I hate this trial and error thing though .

Check the booster where it contacts the master cyl make sure distance is the same as old master cyl if ok try a new master cyl. I have had no luck with reman master cylinders over the years. most parts stores carry new or reman and the price isn't that much different. usually a bad proportion valve wont give good flow out all brakes. the other piece is the rwal(rear wheel anti-lock) valve. Some parts for cars are not worth the hassle to go reman i.e. water pumps, master cylinders

Jim,
The Whooshing sound makes me think booster even more. Although the one time I worked with a bad booster the pedal was
rock hard rather than spongy but that was on an older truck with no ABS.

Is it any different without the engine running? If it acts the same I would further blame the booster. Pump the pedal a few times with the engine off to bleed off the stored vacuum, then see if it acts different.

Dang cranky old tractors anyway. Always one step forward and two steps back with those things. I don't care what color they are either- their all guilty of it.
Some days I wonder why I even bother :?
What started out as a fairly routine valve lash job on my Crosley powered homemade turned into discovering a cracked exhaust manifold. :x
DSCN0888.JPG
It had been running poorly with ever more lousy throttle response for quite a while. My first assumption was to lash the valves which had not been done in 40 years and to go ahead and replace the exhaust manifold.
To replace the gasket between the intake manifold and carburetor it's impossible to get at without taking both manifolds off anyway, a real serious design issue there.
When I did that's when I found this thing puckered in like a frog's rear end - :o Wow.
DSCN0901.JPG
While I was at it why not just go ahead and rebuild the carburetor too?
DSCN0895.JPG
The new exhaust manifold showed up in the mail yesterday afternoon so after stinking up the gas grille last night baking the header paint on I bolted it all together today.
DSCN0903.JPG
Hey it's alive! pretty good too!
Let's see, what's next??
Oh yeah, new reduction drive chains, replace the third member seal (take the rear end out), put the new fuel pump on, and rebuild the water pump (for now).
It's really more fun to go to the tractor show and look at them, some times I just don't want to play anymore

I'm in Houston for the week. What if I find a Cub Cadet?
I'll probably see a set of sequential three digit Originals with fenders and stuff that the owner thinks are junk and is going to scrap them if someone doesn't haul them away.
