Up a creek without a paddle & Tiffen finds .

Post by Jlaws »

I've hauled some unusual things home from plowdays , but this one takes the cake..... Thanks Aaron ..... :D
Needs some work but will make a good one . Was fun hauling it 200 miles down the interstate with a 582 , 982 and tiller as company .

Also found a almost new 115 volt portable spot welder at the Tiffen flea market .
I have a few cub hoods that need the cross braces spot welded in for a start , and I know of a few more places that I can use it .
Also found a machinists cabinet that needs a little TLC , namely drawer pulls , but will do nicely mounted on a bracket on the backside of my metal lathe for keeping tooling bits and cutters .

Jess,

Plenty of strange stuff has come and gone from the farm. Good to see that canoe going to a good home!
Can you buy WD40 by the tank car?

Jess - Nice finds! Good to see you were able to get out and enjoy yourself.

I gotta say, I'm eyeballing your trailer as much as anything in that pic. That looks like a real nice tandem axle. I have a good sized single axle trailer, but a tandem would be so nice.

Tom , That trailer has seen about 10 Ohio plowdays which is about 180 miles one way . Its had as many as 5 cubs on it and other than when my truck hitch broke has never given me any problems .
It is a old RV trailer frame and axles that I converted to a 18.5 ft. car hauler and paid about $700 for . It has electric brakes on both axles , which make it stop fast when needed . Its getting a little aged and I'm thinking of eventually replacing it , but its served me well .
I see a lot of cub cadets while going down the tracks , its a shame I can't pull over and ask about them .

The old trailer sure has logged a lot of miles in the last week . Its been to northernmost edge of Ohio and to southernmost part of Kentucky .
I found a second 17 ft. canoe and delivered them to a friend who was looking for two canoes in southern Ky. , and on the return trip brought these home .
This is what I've got sitting on the trailer right now . All three cubs drove onto the trailer and all have mower decks , but have some issues .

A 125 with a bad front PTO , A one of a kind 2172 dual hydro SGT with a 3 cylinder Kabota gas engine , Cat 0 , and power steering that has wiring issues and needs a little TLC . Lastly is a 582 that runs good with no smoke , but it appears that the engines front PTO pully has a lot of play and I don't think those Briggs 16 opposed twins even had a crankshaft bearing , so I'm thinking the blocks worn out where the crankshaft rides and is junk .

I'm thinking that the trailers going to be used as a storage unit for a little while till I make room in the cub den to get these tractors into it for repairs ....At least the trailer railing makes a good tie down spot for a tarp . ;)

Jess,
I am thinking about getting rid of my 22 foot flat Corn-Pro utility trailer. It is a 2007, has torsion axles, 8 lug wheel, 12" brakes (both axles) and 30 "D ring tiedowns on the deck, each anchored to a cross member. You can tie down about anything you want. It will hold several CC's, but a Farmall Cub, Cub Low Boy and a couple of Cub Cadets will fill it up.......

Paul , I've seen your trailer in use on several occasions and it is nice.....But I see three problem with buying your trailer .

I'd have to get a bigger truck to haul it , I'd also be tempted to buy more stuff because it would haul more ....LOL , and lastly I don't think I'd want to haul something that long down the road with all the inconsiderate drivers I've run into lately .....and that from a guy that's hauled 2 mile long freight trains in the past . But I've never had another freight train cut me off and slam on the brakes .....

Jess, you got enough truck..........if you don't fill the trailer up

I am looking at a new truck and will probably go back to a 1500 and a smaller trailer. We only go to a couple of shows a year anymore, and I don't have as many CC's as I had, so I only need to haul momma's golf cart and a couple of CC's, don't need a 2500 truck and as much trailer as I have anymore.

You can't find a GOOD one

I shouldn't say that, everyone has their own idea about which is best, even the Cummins fan that will swear he didn't buy a Dodge, but bought a Cummins and the Dodge came with it. Enough said.

Thank you Cal.

Don't know how it's going to be hauling a trailer around. It has a "Max Towing" package, but just a 5.3L engine rather than the 6.2L (that requires 91 plus octane gas). It's rated to tow 11K with the 5.3 and 3.73 gears (that may be down hill or on flat ground) We'll see. :|

The 6.0 is only available in the 2500 and 3500 trucks, and is the only gas engine available in them. This one is a 2015, 1500 LTZ and has a 5.3L engine. There is a 6.2L available in certain 1500 models, but it requires 91 octane or higher gas, according to the owners manual. Buying one at the end of the model year you end up taking what the dealer has or can find as to how it is equipped. I got the equipment I wanted, but also got some I didn't want (such as 20" wheels, heated and cooled seat), etc. It was a dealer swap and my dealer had to go to WI to get it, and trailer it back, and it was the only one they could find in a color I would accept .

I think you will be pleased with the 5.3 Paul. A friend of mine has one in a Yukon and pulls his 21' Crownline Cuddy cabin boat with it. Always get the job done.

I hope so. my salesman said he sold a 5.3 to a friend of his and he tows a 24' enclosed trailer with it with no problem, but I keep thinking of the old "hot rodders" adage that says "there ain't no substitute for cubic inches............unless it is cubic money" :) Actually looking at the horsepower, torque, and RPM numbers they are developed at, there is only a couple numbers difference between the 5.3 and the 6.0 that was in the 2500 I traded. I just need to put 500 miles (300 to go) on it before I try towing, as per the owners manual. I still think I am going to go back to a smaller, lighter trailer though. I just don't haul as much anymore.

Nice ride Paul, and the color is sharp too. The extended mirrors are a real nice touch.
The 5.3 can be a bit short on power pulling a full load up a long steep hill that said I always made it to the top
183K on mine at knock on wood it does not burn a drop of oil. That's what I call a time tested design
Good luck with it

Paul - Like Ken, I took a 5.3L to 176K in a 2002 Chevy Avalanche. Towed my 3200 lb camper up plenty of steep hills just fine. Did tend to use a little oil (less than a quart per oil change) with Chevy's recommended 5W-30. I switched to 10W-30 and it never burned oil again. Even at 176K I think it used less than 1/2 pint per oil change cycle.

Even back in 2002 the Chevy electronic 4WD worked great and the whole package just drove great, towed great, and marched right up my steep driveway through deep snow. I really liked that truck. I only got rid of it because I inherited my father's Tahoe with many less miles.

Nice truck! I think you will be real happy with it!
