Back at it.

After laying out from shows and plow days for several years, I was getting bored with sitting around
and doing not much of anything.
I took a trip down to the coast to see my sisters and make my donation to the casinos a few days ago.
My BIL was showing me around their place when I spotted something red hiding under some stuff. It was
a 982 SGT with front hydraulic ports, rear PTO and Cat 0 3-point.
I couldn't quit thinking about it and called him today and made the deal to go pick it up. I believe it has
been repowered with the B&S Vanguard.
It's not currently running so I'll haul the 149 down with me to drag it back to the trailer.
Here we go again!!!

May be a while before I can post pics of it.
I got it home Monday and was able to then give it a good inspection. It had been neglected
in a back yard for some time 7-8 years I suspect (if not longer). Some small animal had set up
residence behind the engine and had an appetite for the insulation on some of the wiring.
S/N 731653 which puts it as a CCC 982 from 1984. The hood decal says International and there
is an IH decal on the rear. I guess they could be repros though.

I got the nests cleaned out and pressure washed it. The only casualty of the 850 mile round trip
was the seat base was broken at the hinges on one side and the whole assembly was lost
somewhere between Mobile and Montgomery, AL.
No one passed me yelling & cussing at me so I guess it harmlessly bounced off.
That was my only problem of the trip so I guess I can live with it. Could've been much worse.

I'll post more as work begins and progresses to get it running.

Been working on the 982 a little at a time. After new points and condenser I got it to fire and run for short
spurts only. Time to look into the carb.
Removed the carb and disassembled (was really gunked up & dirty) to soak in some carb cleaner for a couple of days.
Got it back together and it fired and was running pretty well... for a bit.
I apparently missed a wire with insulation chewed off under the dash and it happened to find ground.
After the smoke cleared I could see the B+ lead from the rectifier to the key switch and then to the battery
was totally melted and fused itself to several other wires under the dash.
I'm in the process of rewiring now. More to follow.
BTW... it does have the original ONAN 19.9 and has not been repowered as I originally thought.

That's excellent, post some pictures when you can. I love any 82 series especially the 982s .

Rewiring completed. Apparently nothing other than the B+ lead was damaged. Carb and throttle
adjustments are done and it's running very well. The Onan sounds great with no smoke, knocks or
anything unusual except for an occasional squeal which I think is coming from the front PTO. It
definitely needs to be looked at.
The 3 point lift works great and is very strong.
The problem I did discover after it ran for a while... It has a hydraulic leak somewhere around the
transmission or differential.
I guess it's always something.

Colin - After you select the pictures ("Choose Files" button), then you have to click the button to the right, "Add the file(s)".

If you want them to appear at a certain place in your post, put your cursor where you want to land them, and click "Place inline". (You can skip this step, but then all pics appear at end of post.)

Then click "Submit" when you are done posting.

You'll get it. I suspect you're not doing the second step of "Add the file(s)."

Nice looking 982(986) Colin. The decals are correct and your tag should be 144986399. 144 = built in 1984 -- 986=rear pto with front ports -- 399 = IH red. I love 982's and Onan engines. I'm not too far from you and maybe we can meet up at the next pd or show.

Thanks Dave. I kinda like the red also. Just wish this one would start cooperating more.
Seems like I take one step forward and it knocks me back 2. Now the crankcase is full of gas.
I've got a rebuild kit for the carb on order. Guess the cleaning just wasn't enough.

Todd, I'd be up for another plow day or show in the near future. If the 982 isn't ready, I can go with
my 149. It's always been my favorite anyway.

I'm not familiar with Briggs. Kohler's can "fill up" for a couple reasons. Bad float needle or pitted needle seat. Fuel pump failure. Some guys find the problem and fix it. Some guys just install a fuel shut off.....and some guys do both. Good luck and keep us posted.

Needle and seat cured my 782.

Maybe someone can tell me how to get the seat out of the fixed jet walbro carb for the mag 20. I looked and didn't see how it was possible. That being said....I had to polish the existing set to stop the leak. Idk

The carb kit came in today and I got new oil and filter.

I'll start over removing the engine tin needed to get to the intake manifold and carb.
I also picked up a new inline fuel cut-off valve so I shouldn't have to go through this again anytime soon.

Dave,
Short of what you already did to your fixed jet Walbro, I think they recommend just replacing the whole carb.

I held off rebuilding the carb at this time. Installed the fuel cut-off valve, drained the crankcase, replaced oil & filter.
Tried starting... no go. The starter tries to turn the engine over but stops short.
Then I noticed the negative battery terminal was heating up... a lot.
Disconnected the battery, went to the garage and drank beer to think it out.
I dunno.

Resistance, loose connection, corroded connection or a stranded wire with only a few strands not broken.

Thanks Mike.
I'll go over all the wiring again only this time I'll remove the fenders and anything else
that is in the way of a thorough inspection.
Stinking wire chewing varmints are gonna be the downfall of this tractor.

Colin, check your fuel pump too and make sure it didn't fail causing your sump to fill with fuel.

If you pull the carb to rebuild it make sure to shine a light down the intake manifold to see if the seam has split or is leaking. Mine was sucking air so I drilled the rivets out to split it, polished it and then used small bolts with red Loctite to put it back together.

I found a wire that was questionable at one of the connectors on the AC side of the rectifier. Soldered a new one
on and it seems to have fixed the problem. Also taped up bite marks on the 6 ga. starter cable that was showing bare wire along the frame.
Certainly hope this is all the troubles for a while. There are other things I want to be doing with this tractor.
Even the hydraulic leak seems to have subsided quite a bit. Maybe just a dried up seal from inactivity that has repaired itself ???
We'll see...

Removed the front PTO yesterday for cleaning and adjusting. That is where the squeal I was hearing
was coming from when the engine was running at low speeds. It was pretty rusted up inside.
I may just leave it off since I'll never use this tractor to cut grass. Sure makes the engine sound better.
If it works OK it might be good to have a spare for the rear PTO.
Next will be to chase down a small hydraulic fluid leak somewhere at the back.

I know I said I had to look for the hydraulic leak but, it's just been to hot in the shop
to get that involved, so I cleaned, sanded & painted the front rims.
I used Gloss Aluminum rust inhibitor paint from Ace Hardware.
Then I cut and added the short extensions to the exhaust pipes. They direct the
exhaust down just past the grill.
Just a little at a time.
