I moved over here as not to hijack the 782 build.....
So...I have heard this a couple times now about red being sold at ih dealers geared twards Farmers and yellow being sold more at suburbanite dealers. Idk and I'm still learning but is this really true... someone please show me a yellow Cub cadet produced between 80 and 81? I never saw....or i don't think I have. Anyone?

Oh...my bad...I guess we r talking CCC/MTD. So they had both colors rolling off the exact same time? I guess the red was just the 782 and the 982? I wonder if they were just using up red inventory....or did this go one for a while?

Mtd sold
Red cub cadets back to IH farm dealers. It was in the contract when they bought the line from IH. Mtd knew the marketing advantages of keeping them yellow. All stand alone ccc dealers where forced to sell yellow and white. When ih/case merged in 85 all cub cadets where then yellow. Other then paint every red/yellow cub is the same 682 782 982 582 and others I'm sure where the same tractor.

Re: Yellow vs Red....
Joe, yes I remember that time now. Farmers who owned red were worried about how they were going to keep their old machines running. I was doing an overhaul of a Super M at the time. What would the transfer of management mean for getting parts? There was a sense of urgency in front of the parts counter and old stock was selling briskly. There was no real aftermarket suppliers to speak of and the recycle business was primitive at the time. It took weeks to gather everything, finding transmission gears was the worst part. Still I pushed on. Here are a few reassembly shots-
In the end I was successful barring one of the cylinder sleeves a heifer knocked off the workbench and stepped on. And I told my Sister in Law to keep her damn calves out of the garage
It has had a second transmission overhaul since then however the engine remains unopened to the day.- dag1450

Ok.....thanks guys. Joe that answers some of my questions..... That mtd sold back to ih dealers. Wow.... weird. I personally like the early MTD hood decals with the black. I have a nos mtd 982 set I'm debating about using on a 2072 that is missing decals.
