Bench top paint booth?

Post by JMotuzick »

So I’m in the middle of doing a working “refresh” of a 86 I have. Also a friend it here working on a “restoration” of a 72. Lots of painting and sand blasting. Between the overspray and the fumes I decided to look into a small “booth”. After looking around on line it seams that the cheep units are just that. Ment for an air brush and models. I wanted to be able to spray a hood if need be. The way I look at it the biggest thing that fits into my blast cabinet is a hood, spray Booth should be about the same. If I have fenders blasted and painted I’ll just pay someone to do the whole project. None of the pre-made units are big enough.

My parts washer seams to always be a “catch all” covered in junk and hasn’t been opened in months. I decided this would make a good spot for the paint “closet”.

After clearing some stuff off the washer but still stuff all around.

After a couple hours this is what I came up with. All the wood was on hand. On the way home from work I’ll get some duct and some lights. I have white paint and caulk to seal it up and get some bright background. A 4” fan is in order from amazon. Still on the fence about adding a pelxiglass door.

I even might have a spot for the old washer, if I can keep the top clear!

So I stopped at Home Depot on the way home $50 bought me 2 2’ LED lights and 10’ duct for the fan, my only expense so far. I looked at plexiglass for the door, super thin and 75$ for a piece that is a few inches to small. I could make it work. I would need to build a frame of some sort to stiffen the plexi a bit. Very flimsy. I left it for now. I think I’m going to try it as is for now...

Looks great? Yeah I would try without the door for now. Even if you want one later..I would try a scrap of plywood. Definitely don't buy wood now, you will need to get your credit checked and approved for a loan. Lol. Maybe run a "clothes rod" in the ceiling somewhere to hang parts. Then if you have another clothes rod somewhere else in the shop you and paint...then hang out to dry. Just like laundry. With something like that with the 3 sides.... maybe your hanging device should spin like a lazy big mike...I mean susan. Use a furnace filter to protect the fan and pipes. Cool

Dag the plan is to hang uni-strut (kindorf) on the inside.
I do like hanging spinning idea, the plan was to get one for the bottom.
Our A/c unit in the house uses 14x30 I’m going use the same size In case it clogs up, I always keep a few around.

The fan came today!
I spent a couple hours as I got home a bit early today.
I set the fan on top just to see. The big project was the filter holder. I cut the side so I couldn’t slip in a 30x14 filet and made a way to hold it in place. I used scrap angle from some shelf’s. I’ve had them for 5 years, I just couldn’t send them for scrap! I used more plywood for the top of the filter to keep it off the fan a bit for more then just a 4” circle of filter area. I also added the 2 led lights. After the lights the 3’ strip of uni-strut. I’ve got a older can of white paint here, I’ll get it shook and some white on the sides for two reasons, seal the wood and prevent dust, of corse white will reflect light and help in seeing what’s is being painted. I still want a door! Maybe I’ll cut one more sheet of plywood I really think plexi is the way to go, just got to find a deal on a sheet!

Just an idea... Try to find some of those flexible clear strips of vinyl they use on doors of coolers so the forklift can go through. (Can't remember what they call them... dag's senior moments are contagious!)

The whole point of the door is to keep the dust out of the paint. I was thinking of buying a piece of the clear plastic used for an added layer of Insulation over your windows for winter. It’s faril insulation over your windows for the winter it’s fairly cheep and clear. I’ll make a plywood frame from some 10” strips I have left over from another project. It will need a second filter for clean air intake.

For that matter, sheet plastic would work too...

Fan is installed and working, paint on the inside for the sake of sealing the wood and to give more light to reflect off of. After lunch I’ll build a door. The parts washer might actually live inside the booth! I’ll try that out later today too!

That's cool, Joe!

I like it... I'm gonna steal that ideal... and raise 'ya another...

I can't build it right now, but once my knee is healed up enough, I'll be building a weld-grind-cutting bench... it'll be about 24" deep, 40" wide, with an exchangeable variety of gridwork/slat tops, but a 1" gap around the outside edges... and the perimeter will be sheet metal, standing up above the work surface by about a foot on the front side, about 18" on the back. Beneath the perimeter will be a sloped bin, like the bottom of abenchtop blast cabinet, leading to one side, where a catch bucket will captivate heavy debris... and across the top will be airflow that leads to a Dust Deputy type cyclonic collector, then out through a blower fan and furnace filter.

I'll use it for TIG and small MIG welding, as well as smaller torch/plasma cutting, and wire brushing/grinding tasks. The table will help reduce dusty debris on the floor, workbenches, and in the air (and Dave's lungs).

Here's the groovie metrology table I built last fall:
Finished.jpg
Finished.jpg (1.32 MiB) Viewed 6139 times
24 x 36 x 4" granite from an auction, very little use, and in very good surface condition... for $10.00.
The cabinets were originally all cracked blue, and 5 high, with steel bases. I removed one, and the base from each stack, and assembled 'em together to fit under the table. It has a roller in center of base front and rear to jockey it around on concrete floor. jacking bolts will be added to corners to set it to height and level. tube openings up top support the granite at proper location (3 point support, on felt discs) and allow the whole thing to be picked up close to center of gravity with forklift. There's enough room under to scoot it around with pallet jack. The side rail pockets and fronts also provide handy space for long steel rulers, levels, and that huge dial caliper I use to check medicine balls for proper inflation pressure...
Yes, I'm a Mad Scientist... but I'm usually happy, even when things ain't goin right.

Dave
Great idea! I never thought of using it as a welding table! Why not?
It would be a bit of work to take the door on/off but it could come off for welding work back on when I’m doing a bunch of painting! I’ve got some sheet metal from work we toss 42”x42” peices often enough, I can line the whole inside and then get some fire brick for the bottom...only trouble is often times I find myself welding things that wouldn’t fit inside....
