Lumber shortage

I was up North around three weeks ago and passed by a huge lumber mill. That yard was packed and they were stacking the overflow into the parking lot. That stuff was wrapped and ready for the train too, it was not out there drying.
I'm rebuilding my deck. Here's what $2200 bucks gets you now and the price is only going up nearly every day. It all make me wonder what I could have gotten this for only just last year. Now there probably is some price gouging involved but I'm glad it's here at the rate things are going.

Ken...a little over a year ago you could have built a deck almost 3 times that size for the same money. Yep.. crazy for a small builder like me! I have a big job on hold as lumber steel and concrete all getting nuts. Lucky for now the gas crisis averted.

I have been at a Menards and a Lowe’s and both had a large number of units of treated lumber.
This time last year I needed to replace a small section deck hand rail and had to use some salvage material as 5/4 decking was all but nonexistent.

It's not only materials that are in short supply. The demand for skilled craftsmen in all the of trades is taking a huge hit. Our company just offered a $2.50 increase to most of our lower tier employees just to keep them on board. Even so, a couple of them left anyway due to the recently imposed mask requirement for all non vaccinated employees.
One Cub Cadet dealer recently told me he was waiting four months for a small chain saw part.
My carpenter put me on his waiting list and it was four and a half months before he could get out to me. He is having issues retaining people as well and I had no choice but to step in and act as his right hand guy. Back breaking work but I did enjoy myself. There was a substantial amount of foundation framing replacement involved as well as replacing the old French doors with a new slider. Now I can shovel snow from the inside out

Yesterday my Son came over and we got rid of that pesky fur tree near the deck.

I was only keeping it there to obstruct the view of the construction from the road. Chopped it up and over the bank it went.

This is leaving me a nice view now and I'm glad it's gone.

On to new projects. I pulled the deck off the 126 today and gave it a good cleaning out.
The time has come to convert the 126 and 102 over to Winter service.Ugh. :|

Looks good ken! I'm sure it feels good to have it done before winter.

I had to buy a storage shed when we moved to MD. A 12x20 shed is $7000! A similar sized shed was $2100 about 4 years ago...

We just make our own!
Hauling logs this weekend from a high end Home that the owners wanted a front lawn. Clearing about 2 acres with lots of pine.
