Convert 1641 with power steering

Post by tdhartley »

Has anyone out there tried to put power steering on their Cub cadet 1641. The 1864 came with power steering and I think it is the same tractor as the 1641 with the option of power steering. I just decided to keep my 1641 and would like to put a few updates on it if possible. The only difference in the body is the 18hp engine, I think. With winter coming up and the snow blower getting ready to be installed I was thinking about the possibility of adding power steering. Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

1641 has a Hydro gear pump, 1864 has a Sundstrand. The Hydro Gear charge pump as far as I know is not big enough to support PS.

Dan...seems to me....if u r mowing three acres...and the 1641 is working good for you.....I would look for another good used tractor as a dedicated snow rig. For myself..I can't stand dropping mower decks and hooking up snow equipment. Call me a baby....I call myself smart. As been preached here many times.....a back up tractor is almost a must as your equipment is getting older. Good luck

I have come to the conclusion that it would be nice to have another tractor. I have been looking for about a month now. I waited to long on what I thought was a good deal. Someone local posted on craigslist a 1836 for $350 with 54" deck. The only problem with tractor was a bad oil leak. The post went up on a Wed. and I was planning on going to look at it on Sat. and it was gone by Sat. Kicked myself on that one.
It looks like adding power steering is out, so I will continue the hunt for another deal. I've been eyeing a 2182 super tractor that the guy is asking $1000 for. I contacted him and he says motor has 936 hours on it but both rear axle seals leak. Not sure if this is a good deal or not. The tractor is ove1.5 hours away. Take a look and tell me what you think. http://elmira.craigslist.org/for/5862793827.html

I would go for that super... Price is fair... Look at the cinderella post in our archives here... Lots of good super info, once you have learned what to look for go and beat him up a few bucks. With the super your getting power and p/s, just get the snow blower extensions sold here in our for sale section....

The guy selling that 2182 just lowered price to $800. Going to take a trip tomorrow with cash in hand. :P :P :P

Lol.....I driving right past there on Thursday.....if u don't get it I will. I don't have a lot of experience with the 2182s. I think the engine is pretty care free.....but make sure u look at the rear end w extra care. Try to determine if it is the axle seals and not the housing. All the mounts to the rear can b a problem. The bolts can work loose and egg out. The front adapter (on the rear) has a bracket the mounts to the frame.....this is a real weak spot on that adapter housing and cracks. Maybe others can expand on this tractor. Good luck!

Its gone. :( Again waited a little to long. Just heard back from the guy. He said someone bought it tonight. The hunt continues.

Been watching quite a few. I saw this one but a little to much money for me. I'm looking at a 2084 that is 30 minutes from me right now. The guy is asking $1100 with 54" deck and blower. The guy didn't post pictures so I had him send me some. The tractor has had all the plastic replaced with metal of a different cub. Talked to him and he is moving and needs to sell. He's showing to someone on Friday and if he doesn't take it he is willing to deal. Here's what it looks like.
