Diesel coolant hoses

Post by vince_o »

Had some friends over yesterday and we were talking about stuff. Mitch is my volvo mechanic and rebuilds old semi trucks. We were talking about the NLA hoses on the diesel. He told me of an easy fix for them, for some reason I dont know why I didnt think of it.

Replace the hose sections with hard line and the ends a 2 inch rubber hose, just like on the big trucks. So then we looked a little more and his brother, who dose custom fab work on cars and boats, said you could take the hose off and get a good custom muffler shop to bend the top on no problem. Then weld a welding rod around the ends to act as a barb for the hose clamp.

Im going to look into this more this winter. My hoses are hard as a rock. after looing at this yesterday it seems to be an easy fix. The only thing is the top hose, Ive been told by others, has to have the insulation on it to keep the eng cool.

Any thoughts? :dontknow:

The top hose does need to be well insulated. Someone on the old registry mentioned this as a possible cause of overheating. I installed new insulation on this hose and it made a very significant cooling improvment on my 1772. I had never given any thought to that being a problem--It seems that hose picks up a lot of heat running across the top of the engine. My thanks to whoever made that post on the regsitry--I still miss it.
good luck on your project

Vince,
I don't think a muffler shop can bend pipe that small. Usually 1-1/2" is the smallest they can do. You could use pipe for the straight sections and find molded car heater hoses for the bends or use the unicoil hose formers for the bends.

Todd

I told Mitch about that post from Gates. He said he had seen it before but never had used it. I would think with all the cart stuff we have in the area, I could find some on to do it. Theres a shop a few towns down that dose alot of custom work for the carts, and small racing cars. If anyone could do it it would be them.

Jim

Joe Allen told me about them replacing the top hose and at first didnt insulate it. They said their 782 got real hot.

Here is how I did the upper on my puller. I found 2 molded bends and connected them with a piece of pipe and used the heat shrink clamps on them. For the lower I was lucky enough to find one that worked in one piece.

I know that. All the factory installed diesels have the water pump at the rear. I'm just trying to give you ideas.

Vince, I was talking to David G. about my 882 and he said he replaced the upper and lower hoses on his with new ones that he got somewhere. He said he would look into where he got them. As far as the insulation goes we use a lot of Armaflex pipe insulation at work and it's pretty cheap so I may have some out in the barn. It looks like that's what they used at the factory. What is the OD of the upper hose?

There are TONS of premade preformed hoses from gates..... there is a catalog online here somewhere ill have to find... when i built the 149D i found a few that were close to what i was looking for and ordered like 3 or 4... found one that worked and returned the rest.... 1 1/4 sounds correct.

i found it i found it!

Heres what i call the "picture book" i love picture books!

obviously its in 2D so its sometimes hard to tell the exact "form" of the hose....

1 Some good things to know, they are molded hoses so u can cut them wherever u want.
2 if you dont come up with the "perfect" hose 2 hoses can be combined with a short section of 1 1/4 OD thinwall pipe
3 Order a few that u think are close and return the "rejects"
4 Sometimes a hose thats 1/16 too larger ID or 1/16 too small ID isnt that big of a deal... if desparate!

Hoses are measured by ID and total length... basically how long it was before any bends were made

Vince, when I replaced my Diesel's top hose, a few years ago, I wrapped it with pipe insulation (12" length of formed foam type) & used foil vent duct tape to hold in place. PWR :) ...... Oh yeah, I must have bought the last ones in country, they were pretty pricey$$$.
