Turf vs ag tire opinions

Post by drcjv »

I just picked up a new set of ag tires for my 1572. Here is the question. For plowing snow whitch is better turf tires filled with fluid and chains or ag tires filled with fluid. Wheel weights on both.
1572 3pnt rear PTO 50" deck, 1772 3pnt 50" deck, 1872 3pnt 44" deck, 2072 50" deck, three brinly 3pnt plows, 54 inch snow plow, cat 0 york rake.

Loaded turfs with chains work a lot better than most ags with chains. Mainly because the chains fall into the valleys on the ags and don't help you.
Also if your planning on chains get a GOOD set of 2 link style. They will give you a lot more traction and a better ride as well.

Having done it both ways, I prefer turfs and chains in the winter.

OK lets switch the job to pulling a dirt plow instead of pushing snow.

I prefer turfs with chains for snow and ags alone for dirt plowing. I haven't plowed a lot of dirt with the turf/chain setup but it seemed to work fine
when I did. I mainly prefer ags for dirt plowing for a smoother ride and for looks. I use ags to mow with too because I have a couple spots where turfs will spin too easily.

Let me first say that I leave my Ag's on all year for two reasons: 1) no time to swap back to turfs, and 2) the Ag's with chains work as well as turfs with chains. My thoughts are that Ag's with chains create more edges and uneven surfaces to bite into snow and soil better. The one negative that I have observed is that certain types of wet snow and wet clay soils may tend to clog the treads because it gets compacted in all those pockets created by the chains spanning the bar tread. This has been a very rare occurance; not enough to switch to turfs. Also, in my opinion, for mowing on even the slightest slopes, Ag's are far superior. There is no slippage or spinning. Shove the hydro and go without worry of going sideways or backwards down a hill.

I would have no issue running turfs with chains but I mainlt run ags with chains for snow/ice.As was said use 2 link chains and for maximum bite I use V lugs......and LOTS of weight, loaded tires, wheel weights and a fat man in the seat
