Doing another CI change over

Post by vince_o »

So Allen Cecele got him an 1872 and him and Jen are going to drag it down here in a few weeks for some upgrades. Im having some flash backs to the first time Allen was here. Collin H was here to help me put a trans in his junky QL. So now were going to put this CI in his 1872. Im really liking doing these. The berrings in the tubes roll smooth and cleaned out a ton of junk out of the housing, going to put new seals in the tubes.

Ill post some more as I go.

Hey Vince, where can you get those roller bearings for the axles? Got a size or part # for an auto parts store? NAPA maybe? Thanks Mike

Just take one of those bearings to NAPA, Motion Industries, etc. and have them look it up.

Well its done, just waiting on the primer to dry and allen to get here. I would have liked to get the gear mesh just a bit deeper, but when I tried it would bind up. So here is where it will stay. Still looks good, but hard to get pics of. I need to get some of that stuff to do it right. It seems to spin better than mine did, I guess the more you do the better you get at it, this is the reason I eat so much, LOL

Hi Vince i like doing these too. I've been into a couple,i wanna see how smooth i can get one to roll. More u do the better the better you get, hail yea. I had a nqs builder tell me he likes to see as for pinon depht, the front side of pinon tooth and ring gear tooth match evenly for full engagement.. As for what Matt said to match up for a bearing, i don't have one all i have are bushings.Motor on Mike

If you want to replace the bushings with roller bearings, you'll have to change the axle tubes, too. The OD of the bearing and bushing aren't the same.

Im learnin, never too old to learn.

As far as the depth, im guessing theres differant thickness on the shims. I only have a few but Im happy with where its at. Its so hard to get a good pic of the depth to post. That why I think I need that blue stuff. Matt and Todd have posted pics using it. If Allen breaks this pulling a plow, well were all in troubble LOL !

Hey Vince. nay it ain't gonna brake (hopefully lol). Matt said you have to change tubes because of od. Yours look like regular cast tubes, did you have to bore them for those roller bearings? Thanks Mike

Vince,
I have seen people use grease too. If you google search "pinion depth" you will probably find some pics using grease.

The 2 that Ive done so far have been doners from narrow frames. I just slid the axles in and fit perfect. Ive plow many of times and ran about 20 tanks of gas threw the 1872 and no leaks yet. The rear stood the test of the kids so far, as fast as it will go backwards and J A M it forward :o ! Ill have to admit Ive done it a few times too! Just for test porpouses only, yea right!

I think what makes this so fun, as long as you dont smash you finger on something, is that Ive been reading about the pulling guys doing it and now Im starting. Next one will will be hydro too, then do a gear drive one. Im sure Ill be calling some folks on that one. Ive never been into the gear drives other than to switch the shifter. Whats the worst I can do, take it all back apart again and start over. :dontknow: This is how one learns.

heres the one out of the 1872 Im useing now. it was out of a 147.

Vince (worst i can do take it apart) many , many times lol. I use those canada aftermarket gears, sometimes they slide together good, somtimes not at all and take them back to Mr. N for a trade since he's only 5 mles away. A spacer has to be cut down since those aftermarket gears are wider,it can be a tight fit in there. I've heard those mwsc gears are always good. I'v learned to make sure everything slides good first. My ? still not ansered on those rollers. On your 147 tubes did those roller bearings just take the place of the bushings? All the narrow frame tubes i've seen have bushings. I need to find me some roller bearings. Thanks Mike

Those were in there, I just changed the seals. So if they have been changed I didnt do it. Ill look at the next one I do, got to find a doner rear to use.

If they are bored I didnt do it. As far as I can tell these are stock, the smell of the oil gave it away. I did a 100 some months back and it had bushings in it. So far Ive used the 147 and this one was a 1x9 from the look of the brakes that were on it.

We had a blast! I wont lie to ya Im tired, with this week leading up to this job, in the shop Frank and I puled engs in 2 big concreate saws that were just as hard. Then did some work on that 127 pulling the eng and something else that just took a toll on my hands and forearms.

Ill meet up with Allen and Jen next weekend at a show outside of Charlotte where we can go and just relax.
