super rearend swap
I've been working on a 1772 with a busted up rear today. I had an 1811 rear sitting here so thought i'de swap it in. got everything tore apart and found that the super has a 10 tooth pump with a 68 tooth reduction gear while the 1811 has a 12 tooth pump and a 66 tooth reduction gear. My question to all who have done these swaps , why not just swap the pumps ? The pump would still mesh with the smaller gear and go from a 6.8-1 ratio to a 6.6-1 ratio, i know that would slow the top speed of the super but how much ? The 1811 ratio is 5.5-1 so that would be why the garden tractors lose so much power when using 26in. tires. Sorry for the long post, i'm just looking for everybody's thoughts. Thanks, Mark

Thanks Vince, I don't need any parts, lots of tractors around here i could use if i did . I was just curious if anyone had swapped just the pump and how it worked out.

Nope dont think cause of the tooth number you mentioned.
You could still buy it and use it as a paper weight! Too light for a boat anchor

I think top speed would be faster and you would loose power on the low end if you changed everything from the 1811 to the SGT.

Re: super rearend swap
If you switch the pump without switching reduction gears, the gears won't mesh properly and you'll break something. Don't do it.

the pump gear will tear up i had a customer try it not pretty changing the whole rear is a option but we use another super rear as the only way to go

Re: super rearend swap
Swapping an entire non-super rear to a Super works as long as you leave the original pump in the rear end you're putting in it and switch the driveshaft coupler to the non-splined one. I did this once on my first 982 to put a cast rear end in it and just went with the non-super pump thinking I would increase ground speed. Even set up the same with the bigger 26x12 tires it didn't have the ground speed my 782 did. I didn't gain enough speed to even notice a difference and probably just lost a little torque but it all works fine if you don't plan to plow or anything.
I wouldn't hesitate doing it again. Just keep the original rear end in case you want to swap it all to a super set-up again in the future. Not like it costs much or anything.

When you change the tooth count on one gear, you have to change the other or change the distance between them or they won't mesh.

Thanks guys, i thought that just changing the pump would cause troubles but the mind isn't what it once was hopefully going to finish the swap tomorrow and get the1772 running again. Mark

Re: super rearend swap
Hi Mark,
I just picked up another 982, this one has a castiron rear in it but has the super pump on it. PO has been using it this way for the last 3 years. I'm pretty sure they didnt change any internals over as it is still using bolts in the axle flanges instead of studs. BTW think you guys will make it down for plow days in may?
Take care,
Mike

Hi Mike, unless someone puts studs in all the rears used bolts through the frame to install. What year is your 982? it could have had a cast rear from the factory.I'm hoping to make plow days it depends on work. Mark

I thought all 982s had cast rears.

Vince, the 982's fell in the same serial number change to aluminum rears as the other garden tractors . Mark

Re: super rearend swap
Hi Mark,
Sorry i meant whel studs for lug nuts. 745,xxx I think 84 85' MTD, but its red not like my first one. The rear end is actually yellow in this one with the serial number plate next to the rear hitch plate. It has a black front axle on it.
take care,
Mike

Re: super rearend swap
I tend to agree with Vince on IH 982's having cast rearends. I own three 982's all with cast rearends , and have worked on and seen several others all with cast rearends .
The lastest of the three is 684035 .
Also the IH production chart says the last IH 982 serial number was 688712 which I believe was before the introduction of the aluminum rear housing .
Now I have seen some owners take the yellow and white CCC 1912's with the later aluminum rearends and paint them red and throw 982 decals on them .
I may be wrong , and if i am , I'm sure someone will correct me .

I see a lot of cub cadets while going down the tracks , its a shame I can't pull over and ask about them .

Re: super rearend swap
I would think that CCC also made red 982s above serial number 720,000.
