Post by TWheaton »

The electric PTO quit workin. Reset the air gap to 17 thou and thought I was good to go. Nothin. No juice to the pto . :?:
. The pto switch has decided to quit after all these years. First one I have had go bad. The similar one off a QL won't work
so I'll order one tomorrow.

Tim,
Before you replace the switch, check the connection at the relay on the left side of the pedistal.

Did i say I agreed with Ugly Jim, I must be sick!

Thanks for the replys, but I'm at a loss on the air gap. Goin by my Service Manual, form # 772-3899 it says the air gap is between .010- .025 or reset to .017. I have power on only one terminal of the pto switch with the switch on or off.

I put the new PTO switch on, test light shows power where it should be , when it should. Start it up, no go. Reset the air gap back to what is was( Appox .011) when it quit and now it
works fine so the new switch fixed it, but the air gap thing is a puzzlement.

The scenario that you just described is one that most of us have been through many times. These electro mechanical things sometimes blow ones mind when they start functioning properly. We do what the books and the experts say is needed and something else does or does not solve the issue. While we stand scratching somewhere, suddenly it is working. Congrats on solving this one, with or without magic.

Tim , One of my neighbors one spring brought over his cub for me to look at , saying that the deck wasn't working . It was on his trailer .
Told me that it worked fine when he parked it the previous fall . His battery was low and we had to put a battery booster on it to get it started . With the booster on it while it was running the the PTO engaged , but as soon as we took the booster off the PTO disengaged even with it running .
It was charging his battery but I guess the charging system wasn't able to handle trying to charge the battery and engage the PTO at the same time .
Sent him to get a new battery and that fixed his problem .
Those electric PTO's can be touchy sometimes.
I see a lot of cub cadets while going down the tracks , its a shame I can't pull over and ask about them .
