Newest Cub Addition

Post by stevet »

So, I've added another Cub to the herd. Came across this 1772 Diesel, and couldn't pass it up. This is how I brought it home, but I do have the tunnel cover, side panels and a correct muffler to put on it. Mechanically, everything is very sound and tight, the hydro works good, the center lift works good, but the valve for the front ports is stuck. Pto works, but the switch is bad, already have another switch to fix that as well. So, my goal is to make it look presentable, not a full restoration by any means. A good pressure washing and cleaning, and I'll paint the hood, side panels and grill surround, and most likely get a decent coat of paint on the frame without tearing the whole thing down. I also have a nicer fender set for it that'll get painted as well. To make room, I'll likely part with one of my others....most likely my 982, but haven't decided that for certain yet.

Steve don't sell your 982...

Nice find looks to me like an ideal candidate for a 982D build!

BB, that exact thought has crossed my mind!! lol Not so sure I want to take that project on, but we'll see. In the meantime, working on getting the 1772 cleaned up and some things fixed.

First and foremost, got the side panel cut out and fitted around the exhaust. Wanted to get rid of that god awful stack, so I took the stock muffler I have apart, cleaned up any rust and painted it with high temp engine paint. Need to check a few auto parts stores for a new chrome tip (I found a couple online) and that small part will be complete....but looking MUCH better!

Question for the 72 series guys, what is the correct yellow and white paint for these tractors, and where do you suggest picking it up? I need something decent, but not top of the line paint....

Don't forget to cut the bottom holes in your side panels, the 1572 and 1772 had the lower holes to help get the heat out of the eng. area better.

The side panel cut out looks good. How did u do this ? drill corners ans use a wizzer or something like that ? I ether have to fill a cigarette lighter hole in mine or make a new panel. The muffler looks easy ....the lower slot not as much. I have been spraying the case ih paint and really like it and the price. 483 Federal yellow qt # 991084R2LF, 935 white qt 991116R1. Dave

Dave, that's more or less it. I used my other panel off of the 782D as a pattern, cut it out and used a grinder to make it as smooth and as close as possible to factory. I have not done the bottom slots, and not sure that I'm going to attempt to. I know the Supers came with them, but my 782D doesn't have any issues so I don't really see why the 1772 will. The basic front end of the tractor is the same on both. While I'm sure it would help with ventilating the heat out, I also don't want to screw up my panels or have it look terrible and chopped up either...

Thanks also for the paint numbers, I'll have to see what I can find!!

Hmmmm.....look what else showed up....1772 #2! Overall in very good condition, everything works as it should, except the front mounting tabs are broken on the differential. Also looks like the top bolt holes going into the differential housing have also had some work done on them. All in all, got one heck of a deal and just couldn't turn it down!!

Joe, how could younpossibly not have any pics???? That's just wrong! Lol.

Dave, not everything turns to gold, but I have been lucky enough to come across a few good deals now and then. This latest 1772 was definitely one of them!

Thanks Lew! I most likely will be getting rid of a few more. The 2 Supers are staying (at least for a little while :D ), 3240 #2 isn't going anywhere and I have a 4-digit O that is in pieces I'd like to get back together. Still have a 782, 582 and 123 in addition to those! Lol

And BB, we definitely need a 3240 thread on here!

No Steve i was just messin around, Good job on the second 1772! I have also had a few killer deals with cubs...but right now i just want one 1772 and i just dont ever see any for sale. I will just keep waiting  I see u never tackled the lower vent holes in the engine covers. I just last week talked to a buddy of mine that said he could water jet or laser them out for me. I have a nice set for the 1572, just someone cut a plug in the exhaust side and i felt i will make a new set vs filling the hole. if it ever gets done i will surly post some pics. Dave

That sounds great Dave! I would love to have the vent holes in the panels but I don't want to risk screwing them up! Lol. The biggest thing I need to tsckle right now is the differential....need to get it fixed or replaced before it gets any worse.

Last night I got a phone call from the guy I bought 1772 #2 from telling me he had some stuff he forgot to give me. I stopped by to pick it up today, and I was surprised at what he had waiting! He had the original owner's manual, the Cub Cadet Attachment guide, the Allied Equipment guide that recommends non-Cub attachments for each tractor, a Cub Cadet manual with all of the service related items in it as well as nearly all, if not all, of the parts breakdowns of the 1772! I was tickled to death to get all of these manuals, and all were from the original owner of the tractor. Inside the owner's manual is even the delivery receipt from the day the tractor was purchased from the dealer.

In addition, I also brought home a good differential housing to swap out and correct the biggest problem I have with this tractor...

I've never done a differential swap, so any advice or suggestions are welcome!!! It will probably be a few weeks before I can get to it, but hopefully shouldn't be too bad of a project.
