CC 3185/3165 and a 3240 project.

This is where we can discuss all the stuff made after IH's sale to MTD.

CC 3185/3165 and a 3240 project.

Post by bbaker »

Folks, here is a thread to document my rebuild project of a couple tractors. If your interested great read on, if not I really don't care! :)

So just over a year ago I was given a 3185 that had a good motor and driveline, but the PTO vacuum thing was messed up and it had sat outside for all of it's life and it was neglected. I drug it home and wondered what to do with it. The more I read about the 3000 series the more I liked them... but this 3185 was junk! I've wanted something a little newer for some time to mow my yard with that had power steering, foot controlled hydro, and the ability to move my trailer (3pt hitch). The idea that I could also take it to plow day really appealed to me as well. I have a New Holland Garden tractor fits that bill, except I can't find a hitch for it anywhere. So, the 3000 series appealed to me, and parts are still available for it.

So this 3185 is what I drug home a year ago, with a good Briggs 18hp vanguard engine, and driveline but very very very abused from sitting in the weather.

I kind of off and on searched for a 3pt hitch for it, and watched parts sell. I finally found a 3pt hitch on ebay that I planned to buy. It sat at 300 bucks all week a few weeks ago and in the last few seconds of the auction I tried to snipe it. IT WENT FOR 757 dollars and I sat there in total disbelief. There was another one listed last week opening bid for 650 that was bought on the opening bid so evidently there was a couple other guys looking for a hitch.

I finally dragged this tractor to my house from the farm and looked it over and decided I would be better off finding a nicer tractor with a bad motor. I found on on craig's list on the other side of Peoria Illinois. I drove and went and got it. It's a 3165 but is essentially the same tractor but it had a busted 16hp Vanguard in it.

Here's a picture of it half disassembled in my garage after pulling motor, and power washing it in anticipation of installing my 18hp out of the 3185.

On my way back from Illinois with my "new" 3165 in the bed of the truck I got a message back from a guy in Eastern TN that had a NOS 3pt hitch kit on Craigs list very reasonably. I offered him an extra 100 bucks to hold it for me until I could get there that night. Mind you I had already driven 10 hours to Peoria and back and now I was about to drive another 4.5 from my home each way to Tennessee.

Needless to say with what I had watched the one hitch sell for on ebay I drove and snagged this. It was a very LONG day but to get what you want sometimes you have to sacrifice.

So then as I was looking on ebay for more tractor parts I found another 3165 with a blown motor in Indiana, just northern Indiana of course... nothing is ever local to me! :) And I watched the auction. The guy had it horribly listed, and horrible pictures so again in the last few minutes of the auction I sniped it. I wasn't going to sit there and let it sell for 99 bucks. I won the auction at 152.50 and then thought crap! I'm gonna have to go after that. This free tractor sure is starting to cost a lot. So here's a couple pictures of it.

Ok so at this point I had 3 tractors and one good engine. (I'll leave out the part of buying another 3186 with a snow blade on ebay that didn't work out) And then I was on facebook and Ray Weaver posted this 3240 anniversary edition tractor with a bad rear end. Long story short I spoke with Ray and he had the snow blade and a deck to go with it, I sent him a deposit on it a few days ago and will go and pick it up sometime soon I hope. I'm really excited about this one as it's supposed to be real nice just needing fixed. AND IT HAS A SNOWBLADE!!!!

So now the plan is to get the 3165 going and probably give it to my momma to keep and for her to mow with.

The 3240 will be fixed and will get the NOS hitch put on it.

I tell this story and will post my progress to prove the point that this is how it starts usually. ONE tractor becomes FOUR before you even know what happens. I could tell you the 982 story but lets just say it's way too similar to this one.

I really don't but I will drive to get what I want. What irritates the crap out of me is when I have driven for something and I find once I get there it's not what it was advertised to be. It's happened....

The day I got the first 3165 and the 3pt was an 1100 mile day.

So your the guy that got the hitch in Tennesee! We were emailing back and forth and I was gonna have him ship it but you snagged it first :o ...you got a great deal on that BB, congrats. That is a nice looking 3240 and the others aren't too bad either. I don't know why more people don't own the 3K tractors but maybe that's a good thing.

FYI....That hitch is a "207" hitch and it will work on the 3240. The "365" hitch is for the tractors with the dual external disc brakes if you find another one.

It's the way the cylinder mounts to the tractor. The bracket that you have on top of the hitch plate has the U shaped mount for the cylinder and the 365 hitch mounts the cylinder to the frame IIRC. I think the brake disc is in the way on the newer style tractors so they changed the 365 to the 207 for the needed clearence. WOW, those hitches are bringing big $$!

After looking at how the hydraulic valves in these machines work, and how they stack together to add up to three circuits, I don't think would take much fab work at all to add a second circuit to one of these tractors and fab a sleeve hitch for the rear. It's something for me to think about as in all honesty I have plowed with both 3pts and sleeve hitches and the sleeve hitches have always been a lot easier to set up and get plowing correctly.

I have been looking at the 3200 series here lately and getting interested, but the rarity of the 3 point and finding one with a 3 spool seems difficult and these are not very old haha. if I stumble across one I may bite.

Dustin they seem to be pretty good tractors. Like all other models they have their faults, but with some attention and care these appear to fairly easy to overcome. I'm excited about having something newer to mow with that has power steering, and a tight turning radius.

Oak I seen on another forum that you need a 40th anniversary decal. I have a buddy in the graphics business that says he thinks he can re-produce them. As soon as I get my tractor I'll take him a side panel as I need one for the other side of the tractor I am getting as well.

I am seriously thinking about joining the My Tractor Forum as it looks to be a lot busier than here, and several more folks into the newer machines as well.

Brian - Somebody has to be first here with the 3000 series. So, yes, things can be a little slow here, but now you have a chance to help liven things up.

I have a friend that just recently got a 3205, and I am intrigued a bit by them, so I would read your thread with interest. Your posts might help me help my friend with his.
So, of course you're a grown boy and can join any forum you want to, but I would surely rather you tackle your project here.

And, hey, I drove from Maryland to the northern edge of Ohio and back again for 2182-2 (aka Cinderella & Flares), so I hear you on the driving. I don't regret getting it, because as you said, when you have to go all through them you end up with a good machine in the end. It is just funny how many other great tractors sprang up to buy as I worked on that one...

I myself will get back to posting, I just needed a little break from the intensive thread I had going. And it's firewood making season. :)

Tom, I plan too I've not run off anywhere but I did join my tractor forum, there's a few guys with the 3000 series tractors over there that have done some projects with them. Might as well learn for their experience.

It appears I will be traveling to Ray Weaver's tomorrow...

Geez BB, of all the days to be running to Ray's, you pick the one I can't slide up and meet up for a bit! Ray's only a little over an hour from me, but we'll be pulling the M tomorrow morning at Delta, PA and tomorrow evening at Mechanicsville, PA! And sandwiched in between, my son has a grad party to go to! Safe travels and enjoy your visit to Ray's!
