40th anniversary toast

Post by VScott »

Bought this one in a package this week. Will be picking it up tonight. It was a 40th anniversary 3240. Hoping to salvage a few parts. Hate to see anything destroyed by fire.

I hope Jimmy Johnson wasn't hurt when he crashed while mowing.

Laugh ...laugh my little class clowns!!! You bunch of nerds wouldn't know a top quality parts tractor if it bit you on the ...

All kidding aside, this one is going to a friend at work. He is going to salvage the deck and rear wheels, and hopefully the rear axle for another 3000 series that he is working on. There just isn't much left. We are both pretty anxious to see if the engine is salvageable.

Man, that one is toasty! Still, should be some good stuff left, just get out the sandblaster. Any idea why it lit off?

I'll bet most of that sheet metal is ok, as long as the fire wasn't hot enough to warp it. That's one way to get that crappy Cub paint off...

As long as there isn't any plastic bits inside that engine that melted (governor gear?), that may very well be ok too. I'm with Vinny, that could be a real score for parts.

Paul, don't know what lit it up but I'm going to guess fuel related. They saw smoke "from unddrneath". Possibly a bearing seizing on the deck or debris in the path of an overly hot drive belt???

Dave...daaaang! That's gonna leave a mark (but not on my stellar feedback rating)

Tom, governor could definitely come into play. Left valve cover was destroyed, but right was intact. Wll be torn down and inspected. The guy that got it is about as particular as they come. (Must not be too particular, he hangs out with me).

Mike,I didn't get the Jimmy Johnson reference. Clue me in, buddy.

Anybody care about the rest of the package deal??? I got pictures!!!!

Ok. Tractor #2 is a 782 that was bought new by the gentleman that I bought it from. On it's 3rd engine, the one in it now is a Kohler factory replacement. (Carb and all, it has fuel shutoff solenoid). Dual hyd outlets, hubcaps hiding wheel weights, and the original power angle 42" snow blade.

#3 is what I believe to be an early 2072. 20 hp magnum, 50" deck, 3 point, and the grader blade. Vin tag is missing, but I m curious about the white tunnel cover...does not appear to have been repainted or if it was it was a damn good job.

#4 is a model 72 with the wrong seat &#5 is a four digit original (April '61) with the collared spindles and smooth dash tower. 4 and 5 have not been picked up yet but are paid for. Pics soon

Vinny - Real nice haul! If you were closer I would be asking about that grader blade! Random Tom comments, no particular order...

Don't mind dag, that was really just another chance to slapbox me! (Keep it up dag and I'm gonna send you pics of wheel weights you don't have, maybe even some plastic ones!)

Jimmy Johnson, NASCAR, come into the turn too hot, can't hold the line, you get it now...

I think the 2072 had some paint action going on... No typical remnants of decals on hood, spear is missing, yellow appears to be in worse condition than white. Maybe they did what I did to my 1872 and just painted the white, except they got lazy when it came to replacing the decals. Then they got stupid and used the rest of the paint on the tunnel cover (seems to fit the theme of no decal remnants). Later, they found their can of yellow and painted the 50C. No attachments should be yellow that didn't come with large pto Cyclops (in general). The 50C was never offered on large pto Cyclops (although the 44 was on GT's), so that deck should be a repaint.

I see what looks like Haban brackets peeking above the footrest, and that has got to be the worst whooped ball wheel I have ever seen on a deck!

But...most importantly, whats with the D-cup tailights!!!

Tom, those are quietline taillights that I dropped in a bucket of Miracle Gro. (D-cup  )

Dave, Front end is pretty light with the grader blade on. Did a good job on the gravel driveway last night. Wish I knew what brand it was. Have not decided what I'm doing with this one, blade may go to Red Power in July.

I laughed when I saw the gauge wheels. It needs a lot but it isn't very often supers with 3 points come along at a decent price around here. Thinking it is early production because the engine serial number is a lot lower than my '87 2072.

Can I buy the rear end out of the toasty tractor?
Cub Cadet, John Deere, New Holland, bobcat, Chevrolet, and Harley Davidson just a few brands I'm proud to own.

BB

The entire tractor went to a friend. He plans to use the rear end in a 3184 so he can have the locker.

I doubt if it is what you are looking for, but the non-locking rear from the 3184 will be available in the near future.

I do not have any 3000 series tractors, or parts at the moment.

For what it's worth iron castings are not affected by heat. Clean them up, tap out the holes and repaint. I rebuilt a crankcase from a 440 bailer that had been been in a barn fire, I used the internals from the machine to be repaired that had a split case. That one cracked in two when the crank slapped slapped into a gopher hole.

Yes, the 3184 is a cast rear axle.

The guy that I sold it to had gotten a 3206 last yr from me that needed rear axle seals. He got the 3184 from me earlier this year, and is going to use the deck, rear wheels, and rear end out of the burnt 3240 to "super size" the 3184 which had smaller rear tires and wheels, and a 44" shaft drive deck. When he gets done with the changeover, I will probably buy the remaining parts to resell.
