CCC Continuous Thread, Shooting the Breeze

Post by Tom Scott »

Scott C. - Can we try this as a Sticky? Me and Steve Williams kind of hijacked Tom Cahill's topic, as we started "Shooting the Breeze" complaining about bad manuals for later Cyclops. Tom probably doesn't mind the hijacking, as we're just hanging out as he goes and does his wrenching ;) . But... I think this would be good for all the same reasons it has been added to the IH section and the Coffee Shop.

Thanks, Tom

Now, back to Mr. Williams' train of thought...
SWilliams wrote:I just have a pet peeve about manufacturers who do this type of thing. It reminds me of the newer Chiltons/Motors auto repair manuals that cover a 15 year vehicle spread when that vehicle had 3 design changes and 15 different engine combination's. They seem to enjoy putting the phrase "Typical item shown, others similar" in there. It's really fun when they are talking about something like the 4.3 GM EFI system. Over the course of 4 years GM changed the intake, injector design and most of the top end of the engine, Chiltons take on that " This is the common application, others similar" When in reality they are almost as alike as oil and water!!!

Oh well I guess they could have done worse and just made everything into the 1000 series....
Steve - I couldn't agree more! Kind of how I felt when (I think it was you if I remember correctly) you got the last set of gears in the free world to convert a 451 to a 450. I had to get a whole new snow blower when I found out they were NLA. Just another example of bad support. And, it sounds like this is the year when the last real GT they have disappears. From what someone reported earlier, the 3000 series will disappear this year. The 2500 series is being marketed as a GT with a tranny that is half the size; not a GT in my book.

Logan,
Post some pics when you get a chance. I also have a 1782 but I paid quite a bit more for it with a 54" blade, etc. I also had to replace the wiring harness that shorted against the steering column...

I've got a 42" inch push blade for the 782. What is the correct length for the lift rod? I know the 27" rod that I have is too short. thanks

Ok; I used the "Upload Attachment" button below. What is the trick for using the "Img" button above? I tried right click, paste, and nothing landed between the brackets.

Adrian - I have a 42" blade for my 1861 that is from the 782 era, so I would think it should be the same. I will try to measure my lift rod tomorrow for you.

I can't find mine right now or I would take a picture of it...

Doog - Thanks for the kind words. I do like these silly little tractors, but I sometimes need to remember that they are just things, and I won't be taking them with me at the end!

I spent years lurking on the Registry being helped by many others. It feels good if I can occaisionally give someone else a hand.

On that note...Adrian, if I can get to it after setting up the Christmas tree, lights, etc., I will try to get a picture today and dimensions of my lift bar for the front blade. Mine has the bend that Frank speaks of.

Just to add to the confusion about lift rods for IH trip push blades, I will throw this in. I know there were two possible attachment locations for the lift bracket where it bolts to the A-frame. I happen to have a blade with both locations drilled. It would have a profound effect on the length of the lift rod as they happen to be about 3" from each other.

I have an 82 series bracket for my blade but I'm not using it. I still have the lift bracket and rod that I had been using with my old 149. My lift rod has a bend in it that, by happenstance, follows the contour of the side panel on the 782 so it all worked out for me...in this one case. For the record, my WF lift rod used to be straight.... Ramming speed put it into it's current configuration.

Adrian - My 42" dozer blade lift rod dimensions; rod is perfect length on the 1861. Blade has original paint and an IH decal, so I believe it is from a time earlier than the Cyclops, so I suspect they take the same lift rod. Perhaps someone else knows more on this.

I represented the angle of 13 degrees with an "*"; closest thing to a degree symbol... No matter what the bend is, the straight line distance (29-3/8" in this case) is your "effective" rod length. So, in other words, you could lengthen a rod that is too short by straightening it (or shorten by increasing the bend), but then it may not clear the side panels. The point is that if you were to make one, a minor adjustment of the bend could be used to fine tune the length. The parts lookup shows two different lift rods for this 42" blade (#375, I believe). Both lift rods are shown as still available as well.

Thanks for the info. I can't use my current lift rod since it''s too short and it's straight. I pretended to order one and it showed a straight rod for the 782 and it showed a bent rod for the 1864. I wonder if they later came out with the bent rod as a replacement.

Adrian - I looked at the parts look up a little closer, and at least according to partstree.com, all the 82 and Cyclops regular GT's use the same lift rod for the dozer blade until they went to the taller front axle like the 1864 you mentioned. This makes sense, because a taller tractor would need a different lift rod.

The illustration I saw did not make it clear that the lift rod was bent or straight, as they have represented the middle portion with a dashed line. At any rate, the correct lift rod should be part of the #377 mounting kit, 747-3088, $57 at Messicks.com. I am betting that lift rod is bent, and that it should be the right one for you, because I don't think a straight lift rod would work on any of those tractors listed. You may have a lift rod from something else entirely.

$60 bucks is a little steep, but it may be lest painful than making one, depending upon the resources you have available. Let us know how you do.

Anyone know what's the proper or suggested white color the haban 60" deck should be? I'm restoring one and can't tell if it's the cub cadet off-white or a total different non-cub related shade. thanks

All the ones I set-up new were the same white as all the other decks. Cub Cadet didn't make it known that the deck came from an outside manufacturer, so they kept them the same color as the ones they made themselves.

That's what I was thinking too. I ended up taking some cub cadet off-white and sprayed a spot and it matched the original color on the deck.

Steve - Great job on downloading all the owner's manuals. I didn't reply in your post, because I didn't want to clog it up with a comment.

Moderators: Is the manual section set up for pdf's, or should Steve's topic become a sticky, at least temporarily?

Still trying to figure out the attachment limits, Not sure if the limit is on my end or what. Anything over 9 meg seems to fail.

I think I could get most posted with a 15 meg cap. There are a couple a LOT larger. Those I am trying to split up.
