THE 3240 thread

Post by stevet »

So, since BB mentioned it the other day, might as well start a 3240 thread! Here's my good cub day....
The 3240 and her new to her power angle plow and other toys....

Here's the rear weight bracket for the 3240....now just need to find some weights!!!

This is the triple hydraulic set up required for the power angle plow. I'll start a "how to" thread for it when I get around to installing it. It actually looks very simple and straightforward, but of course we all do love our pics!!!

And finally, the power angle plow. I will say this, what a heavy set up this is!! Definitely will need to rear weight to balance this thing out!

Along with these pick ups, I've also got some pretty cool stuff with the 1772 for those who have been following that thread....

Very nice! :)

That weight bracket will go on both front and back I think Steve. Just have to remove front bumper to put it on the front.

Here's my second one with my tiller setup! :)

I currently have two 3240's and a GT3200

I have (2) cat 0 3pts, one still NIB, (2) 54" snow blades (one dual action), the 45" snow blower, (3) 48" decks, (1) 44" deck, (1) 54" deck, (1) weight bracket with weights, and the hydraulic tiller all 3K series specific.

I am pretty pleased with these machines and hope to be using them well into the future.

Picked up this on ebay a week ago pretty cheap. An actual 3240 owners and parts manual, but what I really wanted was the hang card from the steering wheel when it was new. I thought that was neat.

That's pretty cool BB! Just got a new set of front tires for my 3240, just haven't had a chance to get them on yet....pics will follow of course!! I've got some time off work coming up next week, so I think it's going to be a Cub project time. Have a few things to do in the 1772's, the 3240 needs hydraulics, the 782 needs the wiring harness replaced and the 582 needs it's carb finished up.

Here is the 3240 I completed. Wish I could find another one. I replaced every nut, bolt, bearing and seal on the deck after every piece except the deck went into the electrolysis tank and sand blaster. That made it too nice to use. :(

YA, that bumper was bugging the crap out of me. IDK why I didn't repair it. Those side panel decals look good too BB!

At some point I'm gonna peal all the decals off of one of mine and have my buddy reproduce all of them. That way any of us with these tractors or if anyone wants to clone one they could. IDK what you call a cloned one. The Mustang guys call cloned Cobra's "Fobras" :)

I've also given serious consideration to pulling the sheet metal off my GT3200 and painting it IH Red. The frame is already black so it would just be a sheet metal color change.

Todd, that looks great!! I would love for mine to look that good, but then again, I also use mine as my primary mower and will have the snow blade put on as well....surely I'll scratch it!! :D I am hoping to find a really good set of fenders for mine and hopefully BB's decal guy helps us out, I would definitely like to spruce it up a little!

Take some pics as you add the hydraulics. While I had the valves out I'd replace all the O rings in them.

BB I'm going to post in the How to section as I work my way through. Needless to say, it's already been a learning experience just getting started! So far, I'm to the point of getting ready to swap out the hydraulics. I am going to replace the O rings before I install the valves.

I found a bad relay next to the starter I unplugged and no change. I unplugged the harness that it was plunged into, P/N 629-3078 (it had a tag) and everything works as it should. Goggle tells me that the harness is a bypass but for what?! help guys... off to tube that soft front tire and mow my lawn without the relay/bypass harness.....

well I gave up for the day went to the fair and watched the GT pull and the oxen pull. yesterday afternoon I had a guy call about a deck i have on craigslist turns out he ran a dealer for about 40 years and go out in 08 now he jut does repairs. He is going to pull out some paper work for me to look over and make copies if needed. He's about 2 hours away so it might not be for a few days or a week...

Not sure about the relay either, hopefully he'll have some good info for you!

BB, thanks for the link, those are great manuals to have access to! Definitely will help me work through my hydraulic upgrade, although it is pretty straightforward. Picking up new O rings so I should be ready to swap everything out Tues or Wed. And yes....lots of pictures!

Joe, or anyone else. I uploaded the garden tractor schematics in a 3 part series a while back. That batch covers from the original up to the 2284 (basically all the designs that started as IH or CCC designs. It doesn't cover the 1000,2000, or 3000 series. This is a link to that bunch--- viewtopic.php?f=4&t=2298&hilit=Cub+Cade ... s&start=30

Here are the 2000 & 3000 sheets I have.

Haven't found a dealer book that has just the schematics for the newer ones. They do include them in the service manuals though and those you can grab directly from MTDs web site ---

Well after messing with the 3240 for so long I was banging my head.... I thought I cooked the starter So I ordered in a eBay/China one. Same results. So today I decided to start by un bolting the drive shaft. Once free the engine was still stuck. Ok out comes the engine, about a hour later it was on the bench. Still stuck. I pulled the flywheel shroud and didn't notice anything, I should have looked harder. I pulled the heads looking for a bent valve. I broke a valve cover bolt off in the left side(fuel pump side) head. So I guessed somehow I bent or threw a rod. I pulled the PTO pullies and the sump cover. Everything looked perfect. Still scratching my head I deceided to pull the flywheel and then rods. I looked things over before pulling the flywheel and found, a square head bolt! Not sure where it came from but it was Jammed hard between the flywheel and stator. The stator seams to have cooked the edges of the bolt from being shorted out for so long. Looks like I need a easy out of a head and a gasket set. I'm also stupid not to change the gov. Gear out. the bolt also trashed the right side coil so that's on the shopping list as well. Downloading the Kohler manual now to test the stator for shorts. It looks ok by eye. Looks like I'll be tore down for a few weeks and will miss mowing season:-/

That really sucks.... My dad bought a Tough Built Garden Tractor a few years ago that was "stuck". He pulled the blower housing off, and it was packed full of hickory nuts, which is what had it bound up. Motor ran fine after a good cleaning.

Stupid bolt!.....I hate loose bolts and nuts for that matter! I have lost a few over the years that have kept me up at night.....wondering where the heck it went :( . Mine normally show up on the floor or frame rail. Yours really sucks!!
