450, 451 and 551 Snowblower Application Notes...

This is where we can discuss all the stuff made after IH's sale to MTD.

So how do you know its a 450? is there a tag still visable and readable? and have you checked the ratio of turns as described above?

You sure your measuring your PTO pulley outside-outside? cause it should be 6 inch or 4.6 inch as described above.
if its truely 5.25 maybe someone swaped it with the wrong setup?

Says 450 on the tag, Impeller spins about 1.8 times...i measure things for living. I have a 451 on another tractor that says 451 .

Actually impeller spins once and pulley spins 1,8 times, Got it mounted today. Pretty easy but heavy, Sounds good but im not sure about the speed.

Ok so confirmed you have a 450.

After looking up serial number breaks it appears that the 1641 was only designed to run a 451 or 551 and never a 450. The break for the small pto to the large pto was at 821xxx. but the 1641 was only made after 821xxx.

Now the weird part.... it shows a PTO change after serial 851xxx which would have been long after the change from the 4 inch to the 6 inch. so maybe this is why yours measures 5.25?

Seems like if they did change the size again it would have been recorded like the others.

I'm sure others can help more than me. For me to post pictures (all done on my phone) I need to take the picture, then crop the picture ever so little and then that will allow me to upload. If I don't crop I never see the right boxes for posting pictures. Once the picture is the right size it's pretty easy and I just start hitting buttons. Lol. Good luck.

Yeah I have a Motorola. I take the picture. Then open the gallery, tap on the photo, when I first open the photo it has different things written all around and "edit" is one of my choices, tap edit, once the edit is opened crop is a choice, you may see a box around the photo with dots at the corners, move that box to make the photo smaller, I normally cut off extra background or a side of the photo that doesn't matter, I don't really do too much, at this point mine is trial and error because I don't see the size anywhere, you should see a save button and tap that. Now you can proceed back on the cub furum with the Up load, and again, all the right boxes should show up. Stick with it, it's fun once you get the hang of it.

Currently no way to upload and run a video file directly due to the massive size of a typical video. Been looking for sometime to possibly add such a thing. maybe.
Till then you can use YouTube to upload and link to the youtube video using the "youtube" button above. If you hover over it, it gives instructions... basically you just need the video ID which is the part after the V=

Related to this thread on the 450 vs 451/551 Blower:
I have an 1882 SGT with a 450 blower that may have chewed a gear, (haven't taken anything apart). I found a 451 in seemingly great condition at what I consider a good price. I have read about the different gearing and pto pulleys, but am wondering if it is workable/cost effective to switch out either the pto pulley to a 6", or the pulley leading to the blower gear box on the 451 to something smaller(?). Has anyone heard of this being done successfully? Does anyone think this would work? As may be obvious to the most casual observer, I'm a relative newbie, though I have owned Cubs, (782D, 1882) for a couple decades.

Do you use the 1882 for any other attachments? Mostly the mower deck? If not just swap out the PTO to 6” and don’t look back.

I swapped over my 1882 years ago and run a 54” deck when I’m out of cheep “fix and flip” cubs. I like the way it cuts and seams to have good power for blowing leaves.

Thanks! I do run a 54" mower deck. Are you suggesting that swapping to a 6" pto pulley will also work for that, (just make the blades spin faster?)? If so, do you know where I might find a 6" pto pulley for the 1882?

Have you measured the pto? It should be 6” for the 48/54 decks. I’m sure a complete pto can be bought new or just a used pulley for one of the parts guys

Outside diameter is 6.2", which means bottom of groove diameter is very close to 4.5". I've read on this site that Cub may changed out the pulleys on 54" decks when the PTO pulleys went to 6" to keep spin speed about the same.
Do you know if I can change out the pulley on this pto clutch without changing the entire pto clutch assembly? And if so, can you advise me on a place I might look for a used compatible pulley for it? The pto clutches I've seen range from high $300's to mid $500's, negating the, good deal for the 451 I found.
Thanks!

Good news! Your reading to much into the pulley size, you have the 6” pulley! Mount the 451 and start blowing snow! The outside is what we are measuring when we say 4” or 6”, most of us are looking for quick/easy when we measure.

That's awesome news! It may be why the 1882 came with the 54" deck, (which is not listed as one of the attachments for this model. The previous owner must have changed the pto pulley to fit the 54" deck. He did have several Cubs, most of them bigger SGT's, and was seemingly very mechanically capable! I've been running a 450, which may explain some of the issues I've had with the 4 blade impeller stripping out. I hope I don't lose too much of the throwing distance with the 451!

Last winter I was running a 451 on a 1864 (regular garden tractor 18hp power lift/steering 6” pto) after a few adjustments I had it throwing 30-50’ there is a thread on here someplace I started. Feel free to have a look, I’ll find a link if I can. Found it!

Thanks Joe! Your experience with these tractors and implements is mucho appreciated! So it's the outer diameter of the pto pulley that is referred to when they compare 4.6" to 6". Sure is easier to measure!

Hey Joe, (or anyone who may have similar situation that they've resolved), what size diameter intake pulley would I need on a 450 blower to reduce spin to appropriate speed, considering I have the 6" OD pto pulley on my 1882?
