3205 with a BIG snow blower!

Post by JMotuzick »

This 3205 came home with me today. It has some blow by issues and smokes something fierce. I'll look into figuring that out later this week… But for now the batteries on recharge!

Joe you will love that snowblower set up! So easy to mount and dismount! And it'll throw snow like this...

Paul, those are actually all metal tractors. After the Cyclops series, they went back to sheet metal before switching to plastic again...

Paul
I bought a 3240 from Steve last summer and I kinda like it! This came up on eBay close by and sold for half of what I see just the blower advertised for. I need to figure out with the air box keeps getting oil pumped up to it and a slow leak from the rear.... Then I will be blowing snow like Steve!

Of course there needs to be snow for that!

I had to take a road trip to Ohio to find my snowblower for a reasonable price. Well worth the drive after cleaning up this mess!

I doubt that, I don't trust that new modern stuff.

HeHe If you ever found one close in good shape for a good price I doubt you'd ever mow with anything else. These are a lot like the 82 series tractors. The briggs engines are OK, and the Kawi's are supposed to be good, but lots of models came with the Kohler Command which is a great engine!

Issues I see with these tractors are. Paint... The powder coat is just that and if left outside for years on end, it flakes off and leaves rust. There's several safety switches, and if the PO butchered the wiring you're in for a fun time. And lastly the Cast rears. Some of them seem to not have been assembled correctly, and the bolts back out inside and can cause transmission failure. If the wiring is good, paint is decent, and rear has been "fixed" then you're good to go and these machines are a lot like the 82 series machines.

The worst part of them is the cost. You can find the tractors from just like the old ones. From free to just stupid prices. Really nice versions of these tractors people list for 2500-3000 which is more than I want to afford. But I have found some deals, and the tractors I now have are really nice but certainly cost more than an old wide frame.

Attachments don't seem to be as plentiful however they are out there and if you look and are patient you can get a few things. Looking for and finding things to me is part of this hobby. Finding Steve's snow blower just made my day! :) Spending Steve's money for him was just icing on the cake! LOL

BB
The club is the fourm!
I blame these both on you!
The first was so I could say I have 40th anniversary model. The second was because the snowblower came with it! still trying to figure out what the issue is with the fd620d. I haven't had much wrench time but I'm thinking the valves are out of whack and need of new guides.

Paul I was skeptical myself but so far I seem to like them!

Joe

When I lived in Watertown I wasn't into Cubs as much as I am now. Spent more time playing racer. I only had a 1210 for mowing and a little snow plowing.

Joe Kawi are notorious for intake/exhaust valve problems. Valves are soft and the seat goes away real quick. I've done several on them but it was the fb 420 and 460 engines.

I pulled the thermostat side head off and drain down the collard cleaned the intake and carb off. i have a gasket set and "oil seals" on order the seals go where a guide would go, i'm headed back to the shop in a few to pull the valves/seals from the head. I'm hopeful that i will fix the problem with out going deeper. After pulling/cleaning the air filter housing several times i let her run before tare down, I was still getting oil from the breather tube, i hope this does not mean rings.... I'll do the one head and see how things look if they look bad i'll do the other side next, but before the carb/intake goes back on. I also am going to order a 'new" exhaust tube for the side with the head off now, seams it cracked and was poorly re-weleded.

Well after $200 on eBay and another 100 for new plastic for the chute she is somewhat back together... I have another $80 order coming from the dealer. Rear end gaskets and seals etc. I was told to part this one before I started with 1000 into her and she still isn't right I see why! But for now I can play with her! Well once I get the new grommets installed in the seat. My friends wife works at a company that makes boat covers. She is replacing the grommets in the seat. I took two seats and made one, it seems the early 3000 series use the same seat in as the cyclops series. I used a no rip seat from a 1440 on my 3205 pan. New grommets and no one will ever know the difference!

This thing is great!!! Not sure why I never put a two stage blower on a cub before..?? I cleared a path to the back deck and pushed back along the street and the small banks that we have... 50 feet is no lie!

I would have to agree bb, Joe has been sucked into the 3k world never to return! I'm glad you're getting to put them to use. Now you need a front blade so you can have the best of both worlds! Only takes a couple of minutes to switch so the same tractor will run both...

Shop space kills me too. I really wanna upgrade to someplace with a shop I can actually work in. I've had enough of the sub-division lifestyle.

Joe, I had a 3165 that had a leaking seal in the rear. I found the seals at Motion and had all 6 shipped to my door for $46.

The inboard bearing is a Babbitt and the outboard is a drawn cup needle roller bearing. The outboard bearing needs to be greased but I guess it cost Cub too much money for a zerk fitting so mine was dry. That bearing is a HK 3020 if you need it. I cleaned, greased and reused mine.

The axle tubes are dry on these machines. The only place I used ultra black is where the inboard bearing block and the cover meet. I reused all the gaskets and assembled them dry, used Rotella 15w40 for fluid and never had a problem out of it.

I know I said this 100 times +. These are the best mowing machines ever made by Cub.
