Well...Kohler said too much time has past to do any kind of warranty. I'm bummed but I completely understand. So I asked Pats if they could sell me a new set for there cost. They almost did. He said he could sell $5 over his cost. So...$58 + $8 shipping I will b back in business. Maybe middle next week. Good thing im not in a rush

Dave, sorry you got burned on the rings. In the grand scheme of things, it's not that much money.
Now, more importantly... You started this back in February, lets get this moving along!

Re: Magnum 20 Rebuild
Got the new set of rings a week ago. Today was a perfect day to work in the basement as it was about 100° outside. Put the other set on the piston and checked ring end gap....all was good. So on went the cylinders. Now I have to build Mike's belt sander valve grinding clearance machine. I will quick mess with something but if it dont look like it will work I will call the machine shop.....idk. The cylinder bolts call for 200 inch lbs ......but there is no way of getting a socket on them. I just got them real tight with a box wrench. I think Tom will freak out about this idea.

Re: Magnum 20 Rebuild
Well that was easy! I made a simple jig for the end of the bench grinder. My claim to fame was the idea of a two grit wheel. First I covered the whole wheel with heavy gauge 220 paper....but then I got the idea to cut it down to a 4" diameter center with the paper....and leave the outer part uncovered for the stock 60 grit. I started w the course and finished with the fine. Sweet!! I took the clearances to the middle of spec. Not sure what's best but I think as they wear.....they sink and clearance gets tighter. So I would like to open them up a bit more but I really don't know what the heck I'm doing.

Re: Magnum 20 Rebuild
Although I am freaking out over not using a torque wrench for the cylinder install, and... the less than optimal accuracy on valve tip grinding, you will likely be fine!
There is a lot of tolerance error that can be had between the grinder wheel not being "machinist grade" square compared to the frame you mounted your wood to, the tolerances of your drill press really being square to the wood surfaces you drilled, and however the loose the hole was to the valve.
All that being said, since you spun the valve as you ground it, any inaccuracy would tend to dome the valve tip end, which isn't a disastrous result. And... Since it stands up on a presumably level counter top, it is likely plenty flat enough.
I will also admit that I cannot think of a better way without taking it to a machine shop to be done. Kudos to you for ingenuity.
Now that you have had the unfortunate knock in the temporary engine, time to really get moving on this one! Hope all continues well for you!

Re: Magnum 20 Rebuild
Well...Here I am....Back at it! I set a goal for myself back in Aug to finish this by the end of the year....So not much time left .
I left off on the valve clearance. I decided to open up the gap to the max spec as they only close with time....So...That's what I did a few days ago. Unfortunately I forgot how exactly I made my jig, I had a coarse spot and a fine spot on the jig and I even forgot I did that....So I go to grids a little off and it was the coarse hole. CRAP!! I TOOK TOO MUCH OFF! Spec calls for .006 on the intake....I'm at like .010. Call me a failure...go ahead I was so bummed. Several people said not a big deal so I kept moving. Heads were trued at the machine shop so they went on fast.

Eleletric was next. The wires r very "work hardened" not a lot of messing with this.... They kinda found there own route.
after that the flywheel... they stress the taper on the crank and flywheel must b very clean and free from oil. Anything can cause a crack...Idk.127, 1650, 1572, 1872, 2072 . A mower, blower and blade for each.

Mounting the bracket and coil. Set air gap with .014 feeler gauge....Tighten down then remove....It ends up with about .010 air gap
I think I did the fuel pump next. I got a new one because I believe the old one was not working....Had to keep tank over half full.127, 1650, 1572, 1872, 2072 . A mower, blower and blade for each.

Re: Magnum 20 Rebuild
At this point I felt it was ready to paint the engine. I could not find a happy medium between flat and gloss. I painted the tin this summer w the heat gloss. I did the engine with flat as I was not thrilled with the gloss. I think the two tone with b cool.

Re: Magnum 20 Rebuild
So after paint I was able to install the engine on the Cub mounting plate. I wanted to do this now cause once the starter goes on...One bolt is kinda blocked. This would have been hard solo....Two boys helped lift onto the plate while I located a couple bolts
Then the new starter127, 1650, 1572, 1872, 2072 . A mower, blower and blade for each.

Tin was next... Nothing too exciting here.....Other than one bolt was stripped in one head. Put some locker in there too.

Re: Magnum 20 Rebuild
My only agenda today is the mag. Hope to install intake, exhaust and pto. That front muffler tin should go on too. Oh and the oil pressure sensor... Sending unit thing. I was wondering what to use on those threads? Teflon tape looks hard to do..... Permatx gasket maker sounds good. If u remember...I had some trouble drilling out the old fitting. New fitting threads in nice but don't trust it to seal perfect....

dag - Permatex #3 or #2 is perfect for the pipe thread sealing. Much prefer to teflon tape.

Bolted the carb on the manifold. I like TL here as the bolts barely stick out and the nuts r thin....and sloppy.
After bolting down the intake... Hooked up the carb w new fuel line. I set the governor next as u need the carb installed to do this
Bolted down the air cleaner base. Used Permatx #3 on the threads....So they don't walk out127, 1650, 1572, 1872, 2072 . A mower, blower and blade for each.
