This is where we can discuss all the stuff made after IH's sale to MTD.

Hanging the Haban

Post by dag1450 »

So...I mow w a 2072 and it has a 374 haban deck. Those of u that have one know how beastly they r and probly weigh in at around 200 pounds. Well this weight has taken its toll on the rockshaft nibs that support this thing. I have known this has been wearing on them so I thought I better check it out. Wow....it was bad! For years I have been planning my attack to this problem so it was just a matter of the doing. This is what I came up with......four points all hanging indirectly off the frame. I left all stock hangers in place.....this is just a supplement for mowing. The full weight will now b on the chains. No holes were drilled in the deck or tractor. I used what I found.

This big chain made hight adjustment very hard but I think I got it close....mayb a touch higher than normal. I will mow this week and see. I did make one adjustment hole in the front bracket but the back has nothing. I will b keeping my eyes peeled for a new rockshaft w little wear...or weld this one up this winter. Either way....the chains r now permanent.

Those decks are supposed to be run with the wheels on the ground. That's why they have such big wheels. My 2072's and 1782 are both barely worn.

Geoffrey....big wheels...Big Wheels? Lol. U have not walked my 3 acres. I have bumps and valleys that would eat those big wheels for dinner. I probably should have a bigger tractor....but this is what I have now. My yard is not very smooth like a subdivision lot....and it's not very flat like a parking lot. Every year I think I will redo the lawn w a dozer, rototiller and Harley rake....every year it don't happen. So for now I think hanging is whats best for me.
I do think there could b trade offs with hanging vs wheels. Hanging puts more stress on the lift components. Using the wheels would have to put a lot of "sheer" stress on other components every time u turn or even just dragging the wheels in tall uneven grass or in my case weed grass. I would say I have my wheels set to hit the ground about a third of the time.
I'm sure we can agree on one thing....these decks r monsters under this size tractor. Thanks for sharing!
Let me close by saying I probably should have a bigger tractor

I'm in the same camp as Dave. My 2182-2 came with a GT54 deck that was obviously operated in the "ground following radar" mode. The hanging frame had been broken and beat to death and rewelded in some very unflattering ways.

Even without Dave's chain solution, I think it is less stress on the tractor to at least partially hang these decks. After getting a new hanging frame, I have set my GT54 up to have each gauge wheel be within about a 1/2" of touching on all four corners. That means that in actual use, usually one or two wheels is always touching on my version of a lumpy-bumpy yard. The few times I have let it ride on the ground, you can really feel the stress as it corners if the ground is uneven or if it gets railroaded by some surface roots near the woods line.

From Cub's design point of view, the absolute best, most even cut would be allowing the deck to run on the ground. With a very smooth yard, this is probably fine, but with the type of yards many of us have in a rural environment I think it is best to at least partially hang the deck.

The worn pins on Dave's lift arm are an easy fix compared to the wreckage I got for a hanging frame!

Each owner will have to decide what is best for their situation. I am amazed at what a good job the GT54 deck does too, even not fully riding on the ground. Amazing cut, always even, never windrows, and mulches leaves like a boss with the plug in!
