1872 no electrical

Post by cwcub »

I was mowing with the 1872 when the pto kicked off, Iflipped the switch off and on and it engaged briefly then kicked off again. I checked the wire to the pto with engine running, no damage so I shut it off pulled the fuse and it was fried. I tried another fuse and it arced so I disconnected the battery and towed it to the shop replaced the fuse connected battery no oil light no nothin. I have power to the ignition switch so I replaced the ignition switch, no nothing, no lights nada. I pulled the tunnel cover looked over al the wire/connectors that I can see and don't see anything obvious. I put an ohm meter on the black and green wire from the ignition module and I get 045 with meter on 2000k. I was thinking stator maybe rectifier? new fuse is not blown. As you may have noticed wiring and testing isn't my strong suit. The seat and reverse safety switches have been previously bypassed. How dangerous!
Thanks for any help

Oh man....sounds like u have a real mess there Cory. Just wanted to make sure u know about the brake pedal safty switch.....down between the frame rails. Start from the battery and work your way out with your meter. Your meter should have a lower scale.... maybe like a DC setting...and a scale of 50 volts. This is a 12 volt system. Good luck and keep post your findings. Sometimes it takes some back and forth..

I jumped across the big posts on the solenoid and starter activated. Jumped small post to starter post starter activated- solenoid good. Pulled plug from ignition switch, plug looks good but the white wire connector was loose from plug I repaired it and reinstalled it still nothing. 12v at black wire in ignition. pulled the PTO switch tested wire and has 12v supply, reinstalled PTO switch still nothing. Checked fuse fuse is good. after reinstalling fuse shazam! everything works. Not sure what I did? Bad connection on white ignition wire? I don't trust it yet but I will see how it goes. What size fuse should be in this 1872 18hp Kohler? It had a 20 amp in but have know idea if that is correct
Thanks

Thanks for the reply dag. I had to take off the tiller and put the deck on the 1450 to do the mowing last week, slower and rougher riding than the 1872 but still mows nice and gets the job done

Late update, turns out the seat safety switch wire that had been disconnected was dangling down and grounding out
