So I finished mowing tonight w the now 1872 that has about 1000 hrs .....while dusting the grass off the deck I walk around front and wow.....do I hear a racket. When I rev it up I don't really hear it as much. Loudest at idle. I check oil beforehand all the time now....i did check again and it's up to level.
So anyone out there experience a knock? Was it worse at idle? Do u mostly hear it out the front? Could a PTO make a loud knock like this..... drive line?
Any and all ideas, comments and most important... sympathy is welcome.....

I only have sympathy to offer, no good experience. I will say that my 1872 has always sounded like it had a slight rod knock at idle, but has sounded like that ever since I have owned it and I think it is just the exhaust note on mine. At least that is what I have chosen to belief it is!

I would not think a rod would quiet with speed, I would think the noise would stay the same(just faster) or get louder.
Let's think clean thoughts and it's cam end play.
You have grass to cut yet this season and we know how long it takes you to build an engine

Re: Rod knock anyone??
I went out tonight to change the muffler out. It was way too hot in the garage so i back it out...and listen. Didn't hear it at first.....ok maybe its a heated up knock. went and mowed a couple laps....didnt hear it.....let it idle......still nothing! I did put in a pint of oil to bring it up to a touch over full.....cause it has been dripping this summer. IDK ...lets hope i was being overly sensitive last night ...
