This is where we can discuss all the stuff made after IH's sale to MTD.

Axle Carrier Gasket

Post by cubcadetfeva »

Hello All,

I am wanting to install new axle carrier gaskets on an aluminum rear. Should I apply any RTV to the paper gaskets or install them dry? What about for the rear cover as well?

Thanks

Evan - I prefer Permatex #2 for the gaskets and Permatex #3 for the bolts. If you want to see more detail of rear work, gasketing and bolting, visit here: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=5282&start=60

I had to rework the entire rear in this one, but the link I gave is the page where I address the axle tube install. There might be some other topics of interest if you page forward and back through the topic. Everything back there that is a 3/8" bolt should be torqued to 30 ft-lb. The rear cover plate is a very thick gasket and needs to be retorqued repeatedly. I like to come back a day or two later after that rear gasket has been under pressure and retorque yet again. I strongly recommend the Permatex #2 for these gaskets. In particular the rear gasket will be much less likely to leak if the gasket relaxes a little more.

Let us know how it goes!

dag - How dare you support the use of RTV here! Haven't I taught you anything?

Obviously RTV will work on the gaskets (but never on the bolts), but I really think the Permatex #2 is a better product for this application.

Okay, I will apply a thin layer of Permatex #2 to both sides of the axle carrier gaskets and rear gasket. Unfortunately I had to remove the carrier because of two broken off bolts by previous owner.
