451 on a 1772

Post by JoeK »

Hey guys, been a while since i posted anything on the sight.
I got a good one for ya, when i bought my 1772 i got a blower with it a 451 and i have been looking at some stuff on what i will need to do to not only mount to my diesel but actually use the blower. regarding the PTO issue would it be possible to change it on the blower instead of putting a new $450 PTO clutch on and having to remove my radiator to do so?? and if i can what will the effect be? what pulley size should i be looking for?
what are the pro's and con's to either doing some tinkering with the pulley/PTO or just leave it be and use it the way it is.
would running it the way it is be more powerful running at a slower speed?

but before i get to serious about it i need to fab up a lift bar, and get some lowering plates

Joey - Dave's link is to a sticky at the top of the CCC and MTD forum. Come back here and let us know if you have any questions after reading the sticky.

Tom, i have looked at the sticky several times and it references changing the PTO on the tractor or the gearbox on the blower, i was just wondering if the pulley on the blower could be changed? but I'm realizing now that may not be able to happen would have to really drop in size to speed up the blower, looks like the best option is to change the PTO on the tractor.

Joe...I would take a breather. Before u make any rash decisions. Might sound crazy...But how about a new blower. Say.....a model 450. This will cost u almost nothing but some time. I don't know your situation if u need it yesterday...If u do...That was good planning on your part.... Buy a 450 and sell the 451. Or maybe someone out there needs 451 but has a 450. It's a common mistake. If u change pto ...mowers have to then change as well.....It's a slippery slope. Good luck

anyone know what the part number for a PTO clutch for a 1782 would be? having the parts guy at my work look, but said there are 2 for that model,

also anyone have a real good picture of a cub cadet snow blade, i have a case blade and i was wondering what it would take to make it push from the rear axle instead of the front of the tractor, tried clearing some dirt off a cement pad at work and it likes to fold under and puts lots of pressure on the lift bar, guy i bought the blade and my blower from said he had a custom lift link make to put on the tractor because he kept breaking them.

thanks, joe

I have converted a 451 for use on my small PTO, 1912, SGT with a pulley change on the blower and it works great. I have been using it for four seasons.

In addition to changing the drive pulley you also need to move the idler pulleys in to maintain belt alignment. The original 451 drive pulley is 7 in. so with the 6 in. PTO vs. the 4.6 in. PTO, you do the math for the ratios and come up pretty close to needing a 5 1/4 inch pulley. I opted to bump the speed just slightly and went with a 5.15 inch pulley from McMaster Carr. The pulley P/N is 6204K27 with a 1 in. bore. I put a 3/8 in. spacer under the pulley, McMaster P/N 92320A382. The P/N for the two 1/2 in. ID X 1 in. long spacers for the idlers is 8491A846. I use an 83 in. belt, Gates PowerRated P/N 6983.

I didn't originally have the 3/8 in. spacer under the drive pulley, and the belt alignment looked just as good as an unmodified 982 with a 450 I checked, but it would occasionally throw a belt. I put the spacer in to make the alignment a little better prior to this season and have not thrown a belt this year.
