The briggs engine in my 1440 shows this item included in the engine parts list for the crankcase breather assy. Does anyone have any idea where this goes ?

James..i have no idea but maybe if u give us a little more background info on why u r replacing the breather and a pic or two it might generate some interest of people who do have this same engine. Are u seeing oil come out of spots that it shouldn't?

According to this it doesn't fit your engine

scroll down and look at the list of engines it fits and yours is not listed.

Re: vanguard breather
It is actually listed for the 1440 on the parts look up for both serial number ranges of that GT model. The reverse listings that Sam is referencing are not always complete.
Here is a link to the partstree.com site for the earlier serial number range, that baffle is part #65 in the IPL for both serial number ranges of that tractor: http://www.partstree.com/parts/cub-cade ... -assembly/
I haven't ever worked on those Briggs, so I can only say by the description and the look of it, it is likely a typical baffle that would keep splashed oil from an opening on a valve cover, or in this case, likely part #8, inside that breather assembly. Just my guess looking at the IPL. My second guess would be on the block under that breather assembly.

Re: vanguard breather
To try to answer both posts : Yes I have oil mist coming up the vent into the air cleaner housing. Add yes I have checked everything. Compression is fine, no smoke from exhaust, Leak down test I would say is ok. The only thing I found after I cleaned the grime off the front cover was the crankshaft seal had pushed out of the block. The engine runs fantastic. I installed a new crank seal and haven't started the engine since. I found this baffle in the parts listing and thought maybe it was supposed to be somewhere in the breather assy but it is to long to fit under the breather and there is no mention as to where it fits that I can find anywhere. I'm recovering from knee replacement surgery so it will be a while till I get back to work on it. I thank everyone for their input, nicky1

Jim
I still think you have a head gasket issue. I've had 2 of them that ran just fine but puked oil out of the breather into the air filter. One was so bad that it would flood the engine. Just far a test I ran a hose from the breather to a catch can. That said I suggest that you contact Vanguard customer support with your question. Here is the link.

Re: vanguard breather
I did some digging on this the other day and never did see a clear pic of where it gets installed. But...the most popular talk that revolved around breathers were head gaskets. This was on several forums. Good Luck and keep us posted. Hope that knee gets better for ya!
