Transmission swap question

My 1440 transmission quit working.
I drove it onto the trailer and it worked fine as of then. I went to off load later and there was a soft whine from the transmission. I stopped and took it out of gear to listen and the sound stopped. Pulled forward and it came back. Went to back down the ramp and the whine ended with a soft pop and the tractor free wheeled down the ramp. Tried to move it and it went forward a couple feet and stopped. Would not move again.
When we pushed it back the rear end ticked like the relief valve was open. The release lever was untouched and had not been touched in weeks. tractor free wheels easily in both directions now.
Any ideas what let go and can it be fixed ?
If not will the transmission from an 1864 fit this tractor ?
