Saw an 1872 w/60" deck for sale. Is there anything right off to look for problem wise? I have a 149 and a 108 so I'm not entirely blind. They want 2k. I'm not sure what the going price is on these units. That seems a little high considering what I've paid for my other tractors. Just a little insight is all I'm looking for. Thanks. Lance

Condition and hours means a lot! That said....few years back I got a nice...1300 hour 1872 with 50" for just over a grand. Im thinking for average condition 1872.....$1300-1600. 2072.....$1700-2100.
It would have to be very nice and low hours for $2k.
Supers r great and you will love it. I just got off my 1872 from mowing with the 60" deck. It's a lot of fun and the 18 hp powers the 60" deck pretty good. Tall thick grass you will want to slow down a bit.....

Oh...I forgot the problems part.
Front crankshaft seal behind PTO leaks.
Power steering leaks around steering column
Rear comes loose from frame. This would be a show stopper if any bolts r loose holding the rear into the frame!
Driveshaft loose. Need to remove tunnel cover to yank on it....lol
60" deck mounting wear. This is super heavy and can wear hangers.
Rockshaft cracked.
I think that's most of the bigger issues.

Thanks Dave. Not sure about the hours, I sent a message requesting some more info. I was thinking about the same 12-15 hundred range. My 149 is now my dedicated tilling unit and I cut grass with the 108. I hate taking the mower deck off and on to use my rear or front blades so just looking to see what's around. Just want to have a dedicated mowing unit. With all those "common problems" I may just have to get my spare 149 back into running condition. I'm sure I would come out better than 12-15 hundred spent on an 1872 if not more. Thanks for the enlightenment!

I wasn't trying to talk u out of a super. A lot depends on how much grass u mow each week? I love everything about the supers!! Bigger and wider tires helps me with bumps and soft ground. Power steering is effortless. Longer frame for my large person. 60" deck really eats up somd grass. I mow my 3 acres in 2 hours.
If you are still interested...I think I saw an 1872 up my way for $1000 on CL.

Those are common issues but I wouldn't let it stop me if I wanted one... except maybe the rear end bolts tearing up the housing. Yes, things happen but if those issues pop up fix them once and never worry about again. Quitelines have their issues, and every other model has theirs. I wouldn't trade my 982 Super for anything.
All that said, I'm thinking that tractor you saw should be about half that unless it's in awesome shape. They aren't bringing what they used to. I probably would struggle to get $2000 for my loaded IH 982 (but wouldn't take 4000 right now)
