Gave my 2082 tractor with front loader to one of my Grandsons; after setting over winter it doesn't want to steer. Any suggestions on where to start looking? All help appreciated Thanks guys Ken in PA

Does it do anything when moving the wheel? Does it still have the factory center lift and does it work? Still moves under it's own power?

Steve's questions are to determine if the charge pump is still functioning. Think of the main pump and hydraulic motor it propels as a closed loop that leaks deliberately (internally) so that new fresh, cool coolant can replace it. The primary job of the charge pump is to provide the make-up oil (the "charge") to the closed loop pump/motor system. The auxiliary job of the charge pump is to power any hydraulic accessories, which are the factory rockshaft lift, front blade angle ports (if present) and the power steering.

The charge pump housing is what you see where the hydro input shaft enters the pump right after the driveshaft. The entire hydraulic system is very sensitive to dirt and you need to follow exact manual procedures to work on. Many often don't work after someone takes that cover off and puts it back on flipped 180*. Obviously if no one has taken it apart since it last ran, then that's not a problem.

Was it stored outside over the winter? Water in the hydro could freeze and burst something, but not real likely. Is the filter fresh? A clogged hydro filter does bad things. Also, the Cyclops lift handle can stick in up or down position due to lack of linkage lubrication (just a small single chain link that connect to the plastic handle). If the lift is stuck in "up" or "down" position, it will bleed off pressure from the charge pump.

If the rockshaft lift works, then the charge pump's not the problem. Then time to look at the power steering unit itself. They're a peach to work on too...

I wish your grandsons well with it. I'd hate to see it sidelined over this. Definitely worth fixing. Let us know how it goes.

Thanks for the replies guys. Grandson is here today and said they changed oil and its working again! it was jerky and tite steering All is well in our piece of Cub land again

Glad it's all good again! Hopefully the hydro filter was changed with it. A clogged filter will starve the pump and kill it.
