Cub blower for the first time!

Post by JMotuzick »

While I have messed with cubs for over 20 years I’ve mostly plowed. I had a qa42 on a 125 back around 2000 for one season. It was the original paint bearings etc and everything just clogged up. Seeing as we have 12-18” falling outside I spent some time yesterday and mounted a 451 on a 1864 I have here for sale. This was my first time installing one, everything seemed ok and I had a few issues but a quick read though the manual I downloaded here shoved my lift and engagement issue. After a few other things this morning I’m back in the shop and getting the cab mounted next.

I Home made a “box” for some weight off the rear and it was quicker to install the 6-12’s with chains mounted then messing with them on the 10.50’s. I think they will bite better anyway! Give me a bit for a cab picture!

Almost 2 hours to get it out of the loft and onto the tractor! 3”+ have fallen. Off to help a neighbor with a walk behind then Home to try it out!

6-12’s with chains might do well. Let us know what you think.

Spray the inside of the chute with silicone.

So after I posted last I made a couple passes, it was already dark and I wasn’t in the mood for any issues. The first two passes went well, I went indie for super and left the tractor in the heated shop to thaw. Twice last night I spent 30 minutes and plowed with the truck so the cub is just for fun. After the second time with the truck, I made 2 more passes, both ended in a clug up. I did not spray anything on the chute, I will try that later today.

The 6-12’s did a nice job and what little I did here was no traction issues. I’m guessing 1-200 lbsof rear weight.

What serial number is that 1864? They had two ranges on them below 821,060 they used the 450 above it used the 451. The 451 on the early tractor will spin the blower slow and cause problems. The difference is in the clutch, early has a smaller clutch pulley.

Steve
It’s the larger 6” pto. 451 is correct for it as it came off a 1863. Every 140/1641 and 1863/64 I’ve seen had the 6” PTO. I believe the change your referencing came about in the m18 era, 1541,1862 etc.

I never tried the 1864 last night, I shoveled the places no cub or walk behind could get to and used the 1872/loader for all of 10 minutes in the area around the wood shed. The larger green back hoe was used I. Front of the garage doors to back drag and the pick up was used for most of the driveway. Due to the wind my wife’s gazebo is 10” deep in snow and my trailers are both buried still. I’d like to work on them tonight, but work wants me for a few extra today. Maybe I’ll use the 451/1864 for the areas under/around the trailer.

I never did double check the blower gear box, I suppose it was changed to a 450 back in the day, but then it would spin faster with the larger pto?

I just look at the series as having the two serial numbers, but I have seen a 1863 that had a 5" clutch. If it had the 450 box and the clutch is a 6" you will know it real quick, they sound like they are going to fly apart with the engine revved up. The spirals turn at single stage speeds !

Try the silicone spray in the chute, and on the impeller and auger. It helps until things get polished up, I do a quick spray in warmer weather too.

So I lubbed the chute and all over the impeller. 3’ of trainings from the side of the driveway and it clogged up. I pulled it back in and removed the chute clogger! See picture

After this I was getting 10-15 feet from the 4’ tall bank I tried to move. It was slow going and I had some traction issues. Plus it was running like it was on choke? It never truly cleared up until I turned the pto off. Due to the poor cab design I think I’m going to take it back off. With the cab on the hood won’t open? If nothing else I’ll take the hood off! I’m going to try to mess with it tomorrow after work or Saturday... sounds like more snow Sunday!

You didn't tell us about the chute clogger! Glad you found the problem though.

That thing is a collectors item, I've never seen one actually on a blower! I've had at least ten different 450/451s through here and it was gone on every one of them for that very reason.
Sounds like you might have a PTO electrical issue causing low voltage, these blowers like power and on a good running engine will throw snow up to 50 feet (my neighbors HATE me  ) The only real issue I've had is that the belts can't handle the power when you hit really heavy snow, Been eying a way to use the shaft drive from a 3000 series but it's not an easy conversion.

Steve
It seams the P.O. left it at the deal for service work and they installed a electric fuel pump when the vacuum pump went bad. Think I should swap it out for a new China vacuum pump? I listed it just for kicks, I’ve got a 2082 out back 6” pto and a 551 here too... if it sells I’ll up grade!

I would opt for vacuum myself. I don't consider the 551 an upgrade really, Have both and the older units are built a lot better. The downside is they are much heavier because of that. I just cut up an old 451 housing to get the steel section the chute attaches to, that is going to be modified to replace the plastic part on the 551. Then I need to do some work on the upper pulley to straighten it and then I'll likely put it onto the 1863 and see what it does after a few modifications. The one thing I like about it is the taller housing. Less snow falling over the blower means less clean-up work, and the lighter weight does make it easier to steer.

Oh and you asked about idlers for the 450/451 Stens 280-870 is a twin to the factory part, but it needs the inserts that reduce the 17mm bore to 1/2 " and add the spacers like this one. With that style insert the Stens only lacks a hole drilled in it to match the factory 6" part.

Thanks Steve I’ll swap pumps and go from there. I found 2 oem idlers a bit cheeper then direct at a dealer with an old price list.
The 551 isn’t really the upgrade, the 2082 is! If the 1863 sells as is I’ll need to order a push to lift bracket as that’s the old one I have and the 2082 has the newer rock shaft.

Well the fuel pump didn’t change much. I messed with carb and gov. Settings and finally tossed the air filter completely. I got 30-50 feet as advertised! These things can be picky and it would take some getting used to the amount you can take in one bite. But they do work quite well! I also see why MTD went to the larger battery. I have a l+g battery under the hood and after a few stall outs it was done. I used the 1882 to jump it 3 times. It’s on the charger now.

I'm running as large a battery that fit the box, Think it's a group 24 ? On the tractor at the moment it has the two OE lights, two 35 watt floods and the 1157 warning lights. All are being converted to LED while in use, hard finding ones I like that fit! I would check that it's charging as mine will run all day with all the lights on and blowing snow without going dead.

The only real issue I've had is that the belts can't handle the power when you hit really heavy snow, Been ey[e]ing a way to use the shaft drive from a 3000 series but it's not an easy conversion.
I have had great success switching to a 5VX belt instead of a Kevlar belt like the Gates PoweRated. Instead of two belts per season it's now two seasons per belt.

I have a 1912 with a 451, modified with a pulley change to run with the 4.6 inch PTO. I upgraded to a 25 HP Kohler this year and, with power steering on the 1912, this is one sweet snowblowing setup. I blow my place with the 1912 and then go blow my Mom's with an almost new, $15K+ Kubota w/50" shaft drive blower and the 1912 now has every bit of the capacity of the Kubota.
