1872 wiring question

Post by cwcub »

Here’s a bone head question. The negative battery cable runs clear up to the engine bay but I can’t see where it attaches to. I’m thinking starter mounting bolt in which case I will have to lift the engine to get at or can I attach to engine mounting plate. It’s been to long since I pulled it apart and don’t have a pic of it🤓

You might want to Google a wiring diagram. What you said doesnt sound right as I know the battery neg (black) goes right to the frame and that ground cable is only like 12 inches long. Maybe to a battery tray bolt? The red pos goes right to the solenoid right next to the battery. Then a red cable goes up to the only bolt on the starter.

I looked at a few diagrams they just show the starter as grounded. There is a short cable off the battery directly to ground then an additional cable off neg side to engine bay and of course the red cable from solenoid to starter. Maybe C somebody added it. Doesn’t make sense to me but I’m no wiring expert.

Sounds like someone was having starting issues and added a ground. It’s not a bad idea, I never liked how the ground went to the frame and not to the engine block. If it’s a worker, I would go to the engine mounting bolt and run it like that.

I would agree that it was added. I've added a few grounds to my tractors and on my latest super project it is being wired with everything that used the chassis or frame as a ground now being grounded back to the new fuse block. That includes a new ground to the engine block replacing the frame ground. Really sick of bad grounds causing problems.
