M18 vs M20 starters

Hard to know for sure but looking for advice. About 8 years ago I bought a 2082 project tractor for a friend. He got itngoing and ran it for some time as a weekly mower. The starter went and he bought a 2182 and the 2082 sat. He put about 4 hours on it in the 8 years. It needed a seat and the classic cyclops nose. I bought it back and pulled the engine and installed the new “Asia starter” that he had bought years ago. About 3 weeks ago I had a guy from town stop in and was looking for a cub to replace his pair of 682’s that both need a lot of love! I mounted the 54” deck and dropped it last Sunday. He had issues from the get go, the biggest is the nut on the end of the starter came off and the starter gear jammed up the engine. I picked it up Saturday and swapped in a used M18 starter. It was a slow starter 2 or 3 slow revolutions, the engine would be running. He just texted and said it died too! So what starter do I use to replace it? OEM for the M18, or the M20? Or aftermarket? M18 Or 20? Anyone know why they are different? Thanks for the advice.
