Is magnum 17 HP same as magnum 18 HP

Post by TomJamboretz »

I have a model 1710 hydro. It has a magnum engine and says it is 17 HP on the side. I find no information on a 17 hp engine. What is going on ? I'm confused. Thanks. TJ

Your sure it’s a magnum? The 1710/1711 should ha e a KT17 from the factory. Does it have a coil/points? Or a solid state armature that you can’t see? Spin on oil filter?

I am assuming it is a Magnum. Seems like it is not. I will be going to the site where it is and will check again. Thank you.

Google found this. It's obviously vertical.

Ok, I had a look at it and I did not remember it quite right. It is a model 1720. And the engine has a latge decal that says it is a Magnum 17. The engine id has Model # HV 185, spec # 58520, serial # 2015610156. Which engine is it? I'm confused.

Also, where do I find info on the 46" LT deck.

Thank you for any advice. TJ

Probably is MV18S. 18 hp Kohler Magnum vertical. Cub Cadet labeled them as 17 hp.

1720 is one of the lawn tractor machines. Should have a vertical shaft Magnum in it. It's an 18 HP but tagged as 17 because Cub Cadet turned it down a bit. It is rated at 17 hp at 3400 rpm, but if you reset it to run at 3600 rpm it magically becomes 18 hp.

It's just like the method CC used on the 1541 Cyclops. The built it as the "smaller" engine tractor so that it didn't take sales away from the 1863. The reality is that they were identical except for the carbs on the engines. Kohler didn't make a 15 HP at the time so they took the 18 HP engine used in the 1863 and put an altered carb on it. the carb has a partially blocked throttle and a smaller main jet. Instantly turns it into a 15 hp engine. But a jet change and 5 minutes with a dremel to remove the piece that blocked the throttle and you have the same tractor as the 1863...
