Mid 1970's 1140 trans axel will not move

I just serviced the rear end on the old girl and she will not move under her own power now.
I last serviced it about a year to 18 months ago and the same thing happened then, except that after I ran it back and forth through the gears a few times it started working. I tried the same thing but this time all I get is a slight whine in reverse. I pulled out the bypass valve and made sure it was moving easily.
Any suggestions on how to get this working again ?
