1862 Pwr Steering

Post by Ike »

Hi Guys,

I have an 1862 in the shop for an engine transplant. I noticed the shaft going into the Pwr. Steering box has some side to side movement and can also be moved up and down a small amount. The power steering seemed to work OK but I'm concerned with the input shaft movement. My other 1862 does not have any play in it.

Should I do something about this or let it be?

Thanks,

Ike

I would fix it. If you have the engine out, now's the time. That play might not cause a problem, but it will only get worse.
I fix them by turning an aluminum bushing to fit inside the column. Then insert a caged needle bearing in the aluminum bushing for the shaft to ride on.

Matt,

To make sure I’m on the right track is the arrow pointing to the area where you make the repair?

Do you have a source for the bearing?

Ike, Yep, that's it. Just under the rubber dust cap is supposed to be a plastic bushing that stabilizes the shaft. From the looks of you picture, there is no bushing in that column. The bearing is generic, so you could get it almost anywhere. Here is one from Napa.

I remember seeing a post from someone who used a flanged bearing in the end of a steering column. If you go that route you just bang it in and you done.

Thanks Matt,

I think I will go ahead and repair it this winter. It’s going to get a CH22 put in it and become the designated mower. This one has dual hydraulics on it. Since it’s only going to be a mower I should move the dual hyd. to the other 1862 that will probably become my work tractor. I might as well do that now also.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Rick,

The block had a hole in it. I kept some sheet metal etc. off of it. May have the flywheel down in the shed. ??

Where are you located?

Hi Rick,

That's a pretty long ride to my place.

Did you try Chris Westfall? He is in Lancaster OH., not far from you.

This is his web site.
