New to me lathe
I picked up an Atlas Clausing lathe tonight. Its a 6 inch, no extras with it, just a basic lathe. I dont have a clue what I bought, but for 50 bucks I took a chance. Dave told me to grab it, so I did. The guy said he got it from where he worked, it was cool to the touch, and was going to learn how to use it. He never got around to it, so I guess Ill learn how to use it. Model is 10100 and has 3 jaws.
So I guess my metal learning has just expanded. Dont know what Ill build with it except the pins for my loader, but Im sure Ill have fun learning. Anyone know anything about them???????????????? Big Mike Todd, Jeff
Sorry no pics yet still dont have a way of loading them.

Re: New to me lathe
They are a nice small lathe. With the right tooling you can use them for a lot of tractor type stuff. Need a new spindle shaft for a deck, how about a special bushing or clutch button. Very handy to have.
You can find manuals online and here are a few things to get you started
http://igor.chudov.com/manuals/Clausing/
http://www.hnsa.org/doc/pdf/lathe.pdf
http://electron.mit.edu/~gsteele/mirror ... intro.html
http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net/activity.php
Oh and one like that sold online for around $450.00

Re: New to me lathe
Vince, the more you do wih it the more you will try, I make tiller pins from round stock all the time and can make them custom lengths by application instead of running to the local ACE and paying their prices. A lathe can be a very good piece of shop equipment with many uses. Nice find!

Re: New to me lathe
Congrats Vince
Two thoughts to keep in mind for safety, ALWAYS wear safety glasses. The chuck key ALWAYS stays in your hand when you're using it. NEVER,EVER,EVER leave the chuck key in the chuck unless your hand is on it. It can be a very dangerous weapon if it's thrown out of the chuck.
So now you'll need some measuring tools plus some other goodies to make it work for you. I have a set of change gears for cutting threads if your interested.
What narrow frame parts you want to trade for tools? Still have the tri ribs?
Albie mentioned tiller pins, if he meant lift pins, the spindle hole is too small on your lathe.

Nice haul on the lathe Vince. Nice little outfit. Now all you need is a little table top mill and the sky is the limit.
I couldn't wait for success, so I went ahead without it.

Re: New to me lathe
Vince,
That's the exact same lathe I have so if you ever have any questions shoot me an email. I Paid $350 for mine though. It was running and had a few tools but still needed a lot of cleaning and adjusting. Came with a few sets of gears. It took a while to learn how to use it right but now every time I need a pto button... turn it quick. Thrust button for the pto on a Sunday when I want to get the pto clutch back together... did it yesterday. Mower deck wheels too loose, things out of tolerance, just want to get creative and make things... you get the idea. It's already paid for itself quite a few times over I'm sure with all I make for myself.

And down the slippery slope he slides!
Cool lathe Vince.
Start grabbing any and every piece of material that will fit in the chuck because now you will start seeing all the things you need to make.
Here is a good link, just have some time because once you start you'll keep watching.

Re: New to me lathe
Well had some time between coats of paint tonight so I started cleaning the lathe tonight. The ways wiped right up and the jaws on the chuck move real smooth and easy. Looks like Ill need something for the tail stock, as Mike described, nuttin getting happy, coming out of the tail stock. But I did put a clutch disk in there just to see what it would look like and to see how the jaws felt. I need another hobby like i need another wife!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: New to me lathe
Jeff that's nice. older Monarch's are beasts!
The only thing about them I never really cared much for is the rather small spindle thru hole compared to the rest of the thing. That one is probably about 1 5/8"
That's only caus it's cramped with so much cast iron!

Vince the next thing you need to get is a milling machine, I have two of them, I have a 1944 index in the big welding shop, and a small off brand I got for $ 1200. bucks from PA.
the old index works good ,but to big to put in the small shop,
