I prefer the term thrifty , although I've been accused of being so tight I squeak .
I though I'd better post before a fight breaks out .
One of my least favorite jobs , masking off wheels to paint
I really hated to paint the two white rims because the paint was perfect , but the other two rims has rusty black paint , so all four are being painted metal flake silver and clear coated .

I see a lot of cub cadets while going down the tracks , its a shame I can't pull over and ask about them .

UPS brought me another new toy today .
They are the cheap Chinese knock offs , but I doubt a $500 gun set will make me a better painter . Either you can paint or you can't . I'm still going to use my old Binks for primer paints , but these are going to be my metal flake , paint , clear coat and touch up guns .
If the weather holds I'll get more work done , and more pictures of my progress .

Nothing wrong with those! My restored 169 and 126 where painted with 14.95 harbor

lol....what the heck r u doing out there with a dremel.....that project needs the big guns! Looking good....whats the plan for rust.....rusty red primer? navel jelly? blast? p.o.r. = paint over (it) rust?

Dave , the dremel was for some fine detailed cutting where the saws all was overkill..... . I plan on wire wheeling and angle grinder with sanding disc on most of the frame . The side frame rails have some pitting and are pretty solid but I'm going to weld in some 2 inch X 1/8 thick flat stock for added insurance . After I get the bottom all sanded its getting a heavy dose of rust inhibiting gloss black Rustoleum . After going thru all this work its going to live a charmed life stored inside out of the weather .

Wow....U should not b showing us so much .....I'm getting overwhelmed. Oak for the floor sounds good to me. A jig saw and some black paint.......Just like "Henry" did.

"Somebody had to say it" - The brake is a variation of our 82 series brakes! It has some Cub in it!!
Jess - What's the deal with the painted leaf spring, did you take it apart? That one is just a single leaf...

Tom , yes I took both sets of leaf springs apart. There was a lot of rust between the leafs . I painted the leafs separately before reassembling them . Dave , the disc brake was locked up with rust and the rear wheels didn't turn .... I had to take them apart to clean them and now the brakes work .
This golf cart is a lot like some of the old cubs I've picked up over the years that have sat for a long time , the first thing I did was soak everything in PB blaster because everything that was supposed to move didn't .
I hope to finish welding and painting the bottom of the frame tomorrow . I've got an extra set of old wheels that I'm going to put on it to get it back on its wheels for painting the top side . I've spent a lot of time the last couple of days scraping off old dried grease and rust , and from the previous pictures you can tell she's been dropping a lot of dirt and rust in the driveway .
I'll take more pictures of my progress hopefully in the next couple of days .

Replaced more frame cross members yesterday around the battery tray area as they were roached . I'm still amazed how much sheets of rust are falling off this thing .
Like I said earlier , I reinforced the frame that was pitted in spots just for insurance . I've replaced a lot of pitted springs and hardware with new stainless hardware.
I still have a lot more cleaning , sanding and painting of subassemblies , but I'm making progress .

Just a quick update .
I haven't made a whole lot of progress lately . Between the weather and other more important projects its not been worked on as much as I'd like .
But what I've gotten done looks good .

Mike , It has seven 32 volt solenoids . Two are for forward , two are for reverse , and three are for three speeds in either direction . The 32 volt DC motor has 4 terminals with three sets of windings . Its controlled by a accelerator switch which looks a lot like a large ignition switch . Depending on how far you push the accelerator pedal down it rotates the accelerator switch which energizes different solenoids which gives voltage to different windings in the motor which gives you the three speeds . There is a 3 position direction switch ( Forward - Off - Reverse ) that controls direction . Its basically a keyed 3 terminal ignition switch with a center off position .
Its actually a pretty simple setup , although I was kind of baffled at first by the two rather large coiled resistors next to the solenoids . But after looking at how they are wired between the first / second and the second / third speed solenoids I believe they are there to make for a smoother transition when changing from the first to second to third speed motor windings .
It kind of reminds me of the old EMD SD40-2's DC locomotives with their two speed DC traction motors . They usually transition around 20 to 25 MPH and aren't smooth at all .

I've started test fitting the body back on the frame before I get to far along . 90% of the bodywork is done and just a few items need addressed before I tear it back down for paint . The body and frame repairs are all done . The body is in primer waiting for paint . Its waiting for me to finish a couple of other projects before I paint it . I'm presently working on a IH 782 basket case I got from Cal .

Bryan , I tried to buy it off him 2 years ago at Ohio PD before he hauled it home , but he didn't want to sell it then . I'm sitting on it in the picture . He gave me a call a few weeks ago telling me to come and get it .
It was missing a few more parts than I remembered , and has a series I engine that does sound good no smoke .
It hadn't changed any except sitting outside for a couple of years so the paints a little duller . I think he was making room for that old JD B tractor he had just brought home .
I think this makes four 782's that I own .

Finally got some time to work on the golf cart . I've spent the last week painting primer , wet sanding and body work. I finally got to put the first couple of coats of paint on it tonight . It still needs a couple more coats of metallic candy apple red . Then let it dry for a week , wet sand it , and then 3 or 4 coats of wet look clear coat , let that dry for another week , wet sand the clear coat with 1200 and then buff . I should be done in about a month....

Jess, very cool! So, what will be the end use? Take to shows to "cruise" in? Or just enjoy this build process and sell it?

Tom , after all this work I'm keeping it .
Besides I'd have a hard time recouping what I've got in it , I was keeping track of what I had in it , but after it got up to $800 I stopped . And that was before I purchased the paint supplies . I've got somewhere between $1000 and $1500 in it , but for what a decent looking golf cart with all the extra's goes for these days that's still cheap . Plus I got bragging rights being able to say I restored it myself .
I'd like to take it to shows to cruise around in , since I'm getting to the age where I get tired walking around , and I do get the seniors citizens discount when I eat out .... , but a lot of shows don't allow golf carts . I'll have to check into which shows allow carts .
