Re: Who's ready for Winter?
Gosh, I hate to sound like a complainer. Over here at my house, I can honestly say I never pushed so much wet, heavy snow! We have been receiving a severe beating since about 3pm yesterday. Accumulation has to be near 15" at this point, as the snow continued to fall.
Report on my model 72: Now I know what having a "loaded" snow blade is all about. This wet snow is a completely different animal. First gear took it all the way, and straight blading was most effective. I run the K241 at around 3/4 throttle, above luging the engine. Plenty of power, however with much snow piled in the blade, I'm not getting that designed "roll" off the blade thus loosing traction on a new set of 4-link V-bar 10.5" tire chains.
Had plans to travel down to my friend's house to push, but there is just no way.

Re: Who's ready for Winter?
Hey there Joe, I thought I just fixed this thing yesterday and cover it back up.
Wrecked my good shirt.
Snapped my ice chopper bar in half.
Popped in oil pan on car. High car. Don't matter.
Truck has bad bearing in front differential.
Road impassible with a car.
Can't go to work, stir crazy, stuck home with Wife watching weather channel.
Well anyway, the power is still on.
Yeah, I'm ready for Spring.

Re: Who's ready for Winter?
I am hoping for one good snow to test my QA42 thrower since I changed the auger speed. Instead of going the speed up sheave route I increased the sprocket size on the driver sprocket for the auger. That the auger is the only thing turning faster than before. Probably not the speed increase that the larger sheave would produce, but I hope the change is noticeable.

Well Charlie....looks like middle of the week noreaster #4 might drop some snow.
Was that sprocket hard to change? I thought that was welded to a small shaft....but just going from memory? How many tooth change are u talking? Good job!

Dave, it's pinned not welded. Agrrah another pin!
Here's what the stock replacement from McMaster - Carr would be, I don't recall now if there was lathe work involved or not.
It sure looks like there's plenty of room for a larger sprocket, Charles what did you go up to Here's what the stock replacement from McMaster - Carr would be, I don't recall now if there was lathe work involved or not.

Re: Who's ready for Winter?
Two cents more while were on it
The driven sprocket for the two paddle auger can be replaced. One cross bolt removed and the unit slides out.
Here's what one looks like- Now with the four paddle auger it's a whole nother story. The entire unit is part of one welded assembly.
But a suitable replacement would be this- Who wants to throw snow now anyhow

Re: Who's ready for Winter?
Only one tooth. I have not done the math to see how much it will speed up the auger. It got a work out today. Had around 11" of wet stuff and I was very happy with the performance.dag1450 wrote:Well Charlie....looks like middle of the week noreaster #4 might drop some snow.

The sprocket is pinned to the shaft. The ones that fellow is selling on ebay looks exactly like the original, but with 1 more tooth.

Re: Who's ready for Winter?
Right you were. We got around 11" of wet stuff. The snow wanted to push ahead of the auger, then went through all at once. Found out the rpm was down on the 147 and the belt was not tight enough. After those adjustments it worked great!dag1450 wrote:Well Charlie....looks like middle of the week noreaster #4 might drop some snow.

Re: Who's ready for Winter?
We had 11" here as well. These last couple snows just confirm for me how I need a blade. Plowing with a loader bucket stinks.
Charlie... yeah you must have had some belt slippage....cause I don't think I ever had the QA plowing snow. Now....I do think I was always moving at a slow creep. Good job on the modification!

Re: Who's ready for Winter?
I did not burn much wood last Winter so most of this stack is at least 2 years old.
It's time to start moving some of this stuff inside, the bottom two rows seem damp.

Why didn't you burn as much?.....wore a jacket in the house all winter?
Or....did you just bite the bullet and turn the oil burner on?

Re: Who's ready for Winter?
No jacket required Dave, I was toasty warm all Winter long using oil heat exclusively.
I was pretty banged up for about 14 months and only lately things have begun turning around.
At the time shucking cord wood was simply out of the question

Re: Who's ready for Winter?
It's time to get ready. I still have a cord and a half to bring down to storage.
Two machines need to be set up as well. The 102 will be a simple tire change out but the 126 is going to need that, deck removal, and install the QA42.- dag1450

Ken.... how did you split all that? I heat with Lp.....but if I ever did use wood....I would get a power splitter and have a wedge with multiple wedges on it. Talk about mass production baby! One pass and u have 6 splits

Re: Who's ready for Winter?
Happy Fall everyone!
This Morning I finished stacking the last of this years wood.
The 102 and the little red wagon shuttled it downstairs all weekend long. The 102 never missed a beat. Not much left here, about maybe 250 pieces. A lot of it got wet and some of it turned punky. I still need to sort that out but I think that about half of it is gonna get tossed back into the woods.

Re: Who's ready for Winter?
We got oil about a month ago ( 661 gallons ) @ 2.399 gallon plus have about 1-1/2 ton of chestnut coal. I'll get another ton within a month. Propane tank was just filled too.
I'm lucky enough to have two 125's so I have one set up for mowing and the other for snow duty. my wife has a 07 tahoe that's 4wd and I have a 04 Suburban that's 4wd. We're ready and hope it's not as wet as this summer has been or we'll be buried in snow until July

Re: Who's ready for Winter?
Not even close to ready for winter. Usually picking up leaves with TracVac until early December. But, cannot pick up if wet. Leaves go on the compost pile. Then finally remove mower deck and add plow, weights, chains. I've been cleaning/painting the 54" snow blade. Blade was kinda rough when purchased this summer. Needed some welding, lots wire brushing and finally painting. Using black Rustoleum as that is what I had - it's a plow. Need to clean/check oil furnace, order oil and cover top of air conditioning condenser, blow off roof. Fall is busy and I look forward to winter to play in the snow.

Re: Who's ready for Winter?
It was a lovely Autumn day here and after attending our local October Chili Festival it was time to turn my attention to getting Cubs ready for Winter.
The 102 has been adjusted and lubricated and also the tires were changed out for the Winter use ones. Ready to go. The pickup is ready. The Wife's SUV is ready. One Cub is ready. The yard work is done.
I removed the deck on the 126 and cleaned it out and placed it in storage, no more mowing this year.
That leaves my car and the 126 Cub left to go.

Re: Who's ready for Winter?
Here we go again, Winter 2020 is right around the corner. Hope that folks are thinking about getting ready. My Son in Law bought a new Cub Cadet two stage 28" self propelled last week. Looks like a nice machine but time will tell. Hope that it works out well for him cus he purchased it on my advise. We are at peak Fall colors right now and that is bound to chance very shortly. Already four frosts.
Got the boys ready yesterday and today. Greased, adjusted, and ready to go. Now they wait. Hey, the 126 is fifty years old this December!

Re: Who's ready for Winter?
I am most certainly not ready for winter.. but it came early in eastern North Dakota, most farmers around me don't have any crop off while some have a bare minimum of crops off.Its just been so darn wet nothing has been done in the fields and now they got 12-18 inches of heavy wet snow. I did something different today, I put my blade on my 1772, I have never had anything other then the mower deck on this tractor and it worked surprisingly well.

Re: Who's ready for Winter?
Sounds good Joe. Give us some details please? I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess a 401? Hydraulic angle or manual? Tire chains ? Rock shaft "tie strap"? I have never used much of my snow gear for the super Cubs but it sure has been fun collecting it. The tie strap is one thing I have never found...or took the time to make. Pics would probably clear up a lot of questions

I actually don't know what model blade it is, but its not a cub blade. I can see a case emblem on it but i don't see a tag anywhere, im guessing it may have been painted over

- just a simple metal bar that's used to raise and lower the plow. only flaw with this set up is if i hit anything hard enough to max out the trip spring on the plow and it "kicks" it puts alot of pressure on that little pin, my fear is it may break or bend the shaft. only thing i like better about the 2086 is the heavy block that has a replaceable pin from xtreme motor works

Re: Who's ready for Winter?
Lol.... Hey..case and IH merged so you are right on with your blade! Lol. But really.... what I'm about to say is out of concern and not just being a jerk. It kinda looks like you know exactly what is wrong with your current blade setup. A cub 401 blade mounts to the front frame and then has legs that extend back to the rear frame in front of the rear wheels. You hit the nail on the head with your lift tube. Maybe someone else can get a pic for you of a rockshaft tie strap. It helps prevent rock shaft sheer pin failure. Like I said before..I don't have one but need to find one. Tractor looks great though!
