So I found that the backlash in my angle box was too much and decided to tear it apart to see what was going on. Upon inspection, the gears were starting to wiggle back and forth on the shafts, so I decided to address it before any gear damage occurred. I bought new input and output shafts and keys, as well as the transfer shaft from Jeff in PA, and I bought new seals and bearings to boot. The transfer shaft got new needle bearings too, and I installed a new chain. (Generally a new chain=new sprockets, but my sprockets were like new, so I left them.) The mount was cleaned up and painted, and I installed new hardware as well. If I have time, I'll finish the rest of the blower over the summer. I've attacked two major snowfalls so far and everything is working well; nothing is loosening up. Enjoy the photos!
I added a little blue loctite to the shaft/gear surface for added protection. The shafts fit well.
This is the later steel cover box, which had grease. I decided I wanted 90 gear oil in it, but unlike the older aluminum cover box, there was no level plug. To check the oil, I drilled and tapped a hole on top for a plug, and made up a little dipstick that I'll surely lose.
Waiting for paint
Tremclad Recreation White is really close.
Ready for installation

My pleasure!
Went out and blew snow again, as we're really getting socked right now.
Worked like a charm! (Until the new ignition coil I had installed suddenly died and left me stranded in the middle of the road.
And then it snowed harder! lol)
