Kohler Command

This is where we can discuss all the stuff made after IH's sale to MTD.

Kohler Command

Post by BigMike »

I am working on the electrical of a retrofit of a Command. I didn’t do the initial install so I’m having to figure stuff out.
The original engine electrical harness is there and I am plugging into it. I am seeing that the fuel shutoff solenoid is in the starter solenoid circuit.
Once the key goes from start to run the fuel solenoid will loose power and cut fuel.
How is that supposed to work?

It won't!  They should have some way of powering the solenoid for both start and run.

Thank you for verifying that.
Now that I look at the wiring diagram again it appears that it gets power during cranking from the battery but once the key switch goes to run it gets power from the mag. Does that sound right?
The diagram shows two resistors, one one each power source.

That sounds correct, except are you sure they're not diodes?  I'm guessing without a wiring diagram, but a diode would keep the run circuit from backfeeding and energizing the solenoid.

Dam my old brain, you’re right, I meant diode.
I’m using the diagram from a 2284.

Ok, all sounds absolutely correct then.  Carry on and git'er done!

I appreciate your old brain, makes me feel better about my regularity of messing things up!

Thanks Tom.
I always thought I knew electrical stuff pretty well…..until I blew up a VFD. It was a stupid mistake but ever since then I always doubt myself about letting the magic smoke out.

Nice project you have there Claude.
For those interested parties...a cool documentary about Mike's machine on utube. Search " the history of the bobcat".
I think it's black and white so Ken and Tom will feel right at home....

Thanks guys.
If enough dead presidents marched I would gladly trailer it out east. I have said a number of times that if I had any brains I would finish and sell the 500 the 444 and both Ford 4000 SU tractors I have and buy one late model skid steer but as anyone that knows me well I won’t. 🤪

Yeah BM, as you already suspected, I'm all talk.  No room for anything else here, three Cubs is enough!  But with snow on the ground that is impeding firewood delivery to the porch by the Cubs, the idea of a skid loader with tracks around tires is cool.

No worries Tom. No one in their right mind would run one of these for any sort of real work. I bought the 444 really cheap. I have about three times the initial price in wheels, tires, hydraulic hoses and other things I have done to make it usable.
I bought the 500 because he listed it at a reasonable price and when I looked at it he cut the price in half and I simply couldn’t pass. Now I’m spending money on tires, powder coating the wheels, correcting stupid stuff done to it.
I used the 444 to move snow last weekend and it did ok but steel tracks would probably make a big difference.

surely you're not done collecting....look at this bad boy Mike. For sale down here in pa. You better lay dibs on it before Tom gets eyes on it. I'm thinking how good it would look with your signature powder coated rim treatment.....

Dr if I buy anything else it will be a 610. 4 cyl Wisconsin power.

I finally figured out my wiring harness issue. I remembered that I have another Command I saved out of a tractor I scrapped long ago. Sure enough the wiring harness was there. Now to find a couple of diodes and we’re back to cooking with gas.

Edit: diodes are on order and should be here in a month or so

Got another electrical puzzler, the wire coming from the voltage regulator/rectifier is purple. I’m struggling to understand where it should connect to the ignition switch. The 2284 wiring diagram isn’t much help as it shows a bunch of switches and such I don’t have.
Help.

Violet wire should be the 12 volt output from the reg/rect. This is a generic charging system for a Command  from the service manual.

No problem, figured a generic diagram might help a bit. Been working on a LONG project lately, but starting to see a light at the end of the tunnel so maybe I can get back to more fun things.
