New to this forum, but not cubs!

Hello all! My fleet consists of an xt2 with 50in deck and 3 stage snow blower, an 1862 with 44in deck and 450 blower, a 1650 with 44 in deck, qa42 blower, and no.1 tiller, and lastly a 185 cub lo-boy with creeper gear, 3 point, 42in belly mount brush hog, and all sorts of toys for the 3 point. I also just added a cub ls33 log splitter, what a beast that thing is!
Living in Michigan's upper peninsula has most of my cubs focused on snow removal! I look forward to learning all I can from you guys.

Well here she is. Quite the workhorse this one is. It was owned since new by the local DPW. I purchased it from them with the rake, grader blade, and harrow about 4 years ago. I've since bought a boom pole, living in the woods, this is my most used attachment dragging trees around, and also a plow and a trip bucket.

Welcome! Looking good. "A cub cadet on steroids" as I would tell my boys as we were driving to look at one. Those lo boys were on my bucket list for years. Every one I looked at was a little rougher than I wanted. So I would come home and get on I think it's Hamilton bob's website and go through the dance of restoration. Lol. In the meantime I found a big orange thing that was made in Japan. I do love the hydro drive...(it's like butter), vs the gears on a loboy

I agree, hydro on a loboy would be fantastic! However that silky smooth 4 cylinder has ZERO vibration, and is so quite you can carry a normal conversation while it's running full tilt. There's things I do where I wish it was a hydro, then there's other times I am glad it's not. The only thing I consistently wish, is that I had a loader for it! I'm sure your orange one either has one, or is relatively easy to get one. Finding an original loader for this old girl is proving to be next to impossible. The other item I hate is the PTO. It spins backwards, and at engine rpm. I really wish it was industry standard 540. They used to make gear boxes to adapt it to a 540rpm pto, but they are also very hard to find, and very expensive when you do. The last one I found, had a stripped gear, and was still $900. That's more than I got into the tractor for!!!

Wow...you did good for a thousand!! The ones I looked at were a couple grand. Yes that engine runs amazing. It has very unique sound. I mowed with one as a teenager for a few years. Here's what's crazy and correct me on this...but i think it's rated at like 15 or something horse power. I remember it being stupid low rating but it's as strong as an ox. I guess it's in the torque.

Your right, the 154 lo-boys are 15hp the 184 are 18. Remember the lo-boys are cubs, cubs came out in 47, but where designed in the late 30’s. The war put a hood in things, they where first 7hp think they where made to replace horses on a 2-4 horse farm.

That is the complaint on them, everyone here's 15-18 hp and thinks it's underpowered and useless. What they forget is that back then they designed tractors to use gear reduction drives, rotating mass, and torque to keep a low hp rating, but still do gobs of work, without running low on power. That 18hp pushes a 60" deck better than the 23 hp kawasaki pushes a 50" deck in my new xt2, and it is quiter, and more fuel efficient. I've heard from an old farmer, that the reason almost every garden tractor stayed under 20hp due to a "farm tax" he called it. He said that if it was over 20hp rating, you had to pay sales tax and a farm tax. I'm not sure if that's true, maybe it was just a Midwest thing, but that's what he claimed. Which would also explain why we had 19.9hp small engine for a time.
