Site UPDATE soon!

Post by Dave C »

Hi Folks,

Will be doing an update soon. gotta get the PHP to 8.2 which means i have to update the forum to 3.3.11

Sometime... dont know when, should be in the next 2 weeks or so.  ill do the update, which will not take too long but since we have ALOT of customizations getting things back to "normal" will take some time as i have to slowly update extensions and make any other modifications to the software to make things look the same again.

So dont fret if things look strange. they will get back to normal soon.

I will post here as i make progress

Thanks, your friendly forum guru

Only thing I've noticed might be my imagination but the fonts and entire page looks smaller than it was? If I bump my browser up to 110% it looks "normal"

Steve - Yes, I think the page width is temporarily reduced. I expect Dave will correct all the formatting and colors at the same time.

Dave is steady working in the background. We had to turn off new registrations for a day while he updated the anti-spam, but that is complete and new members can again join.

Oof. They're making you work for this one! Keep slugging away, you're getting there.

Too bad they didn't leave a way to retain all the previous settings before updating.

You "could" leave all the extra programming during an update. But you risk the chance of something not playing well with others and crashing the forum. Add the fact that the forum was out of date, along with the PHP version "thats the engine that runs the show" and all the extra programming "extensions" were out of date.
So the risk of injury was higer.

Some of the changes are hard coded, like the Yellow background. Which go away during an update as the file is replaced with an updated one.
If i was smart i would make some notes where these changes are so in 2 years i could replicate them.... again "if i was smart"

I could also use an "automatic" update which attempts to find custom changes and merge them. again this could be risky.

A example of how i change the color to yellow.
Standard white is hex code "FFFFFF" and the yellow we use is "FFCC00"

Code: Select all

--------------------------------------------------------------
Colours and backgrounds for common.css
-------------------------------------------------------------- */

html, body {
	color: #536482;
	background-color: #FFCC00;
}

h1 {
	color: #FFCC00;
}

h2 {
	color: #28313F;
}

h3 {
	border-bottom-color: #CCCCCC;
	color: #115098;
}

hr {
	border-color: #FFFFFF;
	border-top-color: #CCCCCC;
}

Yeah, I get the "playing it safe", better than a giant jumbled mess to sort out! Start back with the simple stock format and add features back in makes sense. And the beer smiley works properly again!!
